I feel like Alaska would be cooler, I know it's not in the continuous USA but it would definitely have more interesting stage potential and being the biggest state it would definitely be a larger show of power.
Then again, when they destroy the state, is that like a constant threat or does it happen at the very start of the story?

It was at the very start, but it was like "if you don't defeat me in X time of hours I will destroy Washington/London/Tokyo/any metropolis next", I don't know too much about USA so thats why the selection was random, either way I will have Alaska in mind when I rewrite the story.
