Agreed - Even if I put me wanting ANY new Sonic character in Smash aside, Knuckles seems like the one who'd cause the least controversy (even if I would prefer Eggman by a small margin). There's nothing really that many problems he'd theoretically bring to the table - I'd sure love a Little Mac who has an actual recovery, and Knuckles seems like he could fit that bill and then some.

how would knuckles not be classic bias?

Tails had somewhat of a reduced prescence in the 2000s games compared to Knuckles, and the "nostalgia-biased" (note the quotation marks) modern games tend to feature Tails more heavily than Knuckles.

No he didn’t. I played nearly all of them and knuckles did not have a bigger role than tails
