I just use y and a. For retreating bairs, you can do them you just have to train your thumbs to be fast and have good timing. MacD uses x and a i believe. Check out his stream sometime, he also has a controller cam so you can see how he does different things.

I was watching some peach matches last night and I saw that they would use a retreating/approaching FC nair OoS and they would be moving fast. The only ways to vary your grounded movement are dash dancing, wave dashing and rolls. A trick you will see a lot of good peaches use is to dash-wave dash-dash. But peach is a character that had air control so I would focus more on platform movement with wavelanding and such.

I don't use claw and I can still do retreating fairs. You just have to be quick with your thumb. A lot of people argue that you need to to quickly FC a move but if you can't FC bair and chain it quickly without claw, how are you going to chain FC nairs?

When playinh against a marth I like to wait until they are about to up b and down throw a turnip right off the ledge. Then quickly float to the edge to edge hog. Gimp the heck out of a lot of players. Won't work against really good people though.

If you FC Bair to down smash on a sheik you are going to get punished. It won't shield poke. Just something to keep in mind.
