upon further review, nintendo sent me a new wii u entirely. they couldn't save my data, but put my mii on the new one to link to my nintendo account, as well as my brother's. i haven't tried to play smash or hyrule warriors yet, only a game i didn't even get to open before having to send it off...

I already had the error and was sending it in to Nintendo to either have the slim chance they could save it, or lose everything anyway. I had nothing to lose by copying the minimal SD files I had elsewhere.

I don't think the SD card is the problem, personally, but it seems like nothing we've seen is a sure trigger. You can leave it out if you want, I just wouldn't bank on it keeping you totally safe.
