If it's not coming back until next year, then I really don't think we need to be worried about not getting any major announcements just yet. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't hear anything substantial until we're much closer to launch.

I think some other possibilities could include Pyramid Head, Monokuma, and Freddy Fazbear. Also, are there any series besides those already mentioned which have a rotating cast of heroes, but a consistent, recurring villain?

Maybe Wart or Mouser? It always seemed weird to me that Birdo got to stick around after Super Mario Bros. 2, but the main villain and the other recurring boss got left behind. There's also Tatanga, who's in a similar position, having never shown up again again after the Mario Land games.
