I know how crazily unlikely it all sounds, but WOZ and I have spent the last two hours going over every possible time that money was not in the box. From when it was handed it by each crew, to when i was passed the envelope and put it in the box. I KNOW it made it there and there is no doubt in my mind, so as incredibly unlikely as it sounds, please keep an open mind.
It had to be done before the envelope was placed in the box.

We should start a Paypal fundraiser or something. Does anyone know how to do that?
i'll set something up tomorrow afternoon.
Please do, Hazy, because I would love to contribute. What the theives did is just completely embarrassing for this entire community. The tournament organizers don't deserve **** like this to happen to them. So @ Mages, please look into an actual criminal investigation. You shouldn't let these theives take advantage of you, or what they see as "easy money" or no punishment. And know that we all feel for your loss. :x

It'll be hard. We're talking about 200 people that came from different parts of the country. I'm not sure what the police can accomplish, but if you really think they can help somehow, we'll see what we can do.

As it stands now, the last time we saw the money before it was stolen was when it was placed inside the lockbox during singles registration - this was saturday night. The money was found missing when teams was ready to be paid out, and the envelope containing the crews money wasn't in the lockbox. This was around late Sunday afternoon right after Singles pools. This incident happened somewhere in between.

Facts:
  • The 2 lockboxes, a big lockbox with a smaller lockbox contained inside, were safely hidden. The envelopes were supposed to be inside the smaller lockbox.
  • Omegawhitemage had the only copies of the keys to the lockboxes, and he had it with him the entire time. The only time he took them off his neck was when he used them to lock and unlock the boxes.
  • The envelopes were last seen during a total of two money transfers during singles registration. The first was from Blue, giving me the envelope to hand to omegawhitemage, who is on the table a couple of steps away - it is handed to him and is placed in the lockbox. The second was when blue directly handed it to omegawhitemage. That money was also placed inside the lockbox. Both of these envelopes are either crews or teams - we're not certain which one was which.
  • When blue investigated the lockboxes, he found that the bigger box's lock was broken. The smaller lockbox, however, worked fine.
  • When sleeping, omegawhitemage hid himself in a random room with the keys around his neck and under his shirt.
  • Some people did sleep in the room where the money was held, though the lockboxes were hidden as stated.
Please let me know if I have any information incorrect.

What has me curious is why only the crews envelope was taken, and not the teams envelope, when both envelopes were together in the smaller lockbox. I also don't know how anyone could have gotten to the smaller lockbox even IF the bigger lockbox was broken, because the only money missing was indeed that crews envelope, and the smaller lockbox's mechanism was fine.

I personally think its a case where, somehow, someone saw an envelope, grabbed it, and made a run for it. There has to be something missing between point A and B that we haven't thought of yet.

At no point was Blackmage I not in the room and not only that, it was hidden in the room.
When the crew battle was going on, after the first few matches the room was vacant, however nobody even knew that box was in there. Also, I did see a few other times during the day when nobody was in there but I don't know anything about what went on during those times. >_<
Don't leave us~ ;_;

the only time i remember even being in the mages' lair (there was a sign that said to say out :p) was saturday night (or sunday morning) where we did that draft crews battle.
does anybody think anything could have happened then ? most of us were relatively sleepy so it could be nothing. the only reason i bring it up is because as far as i know, that would be the only time when people were even supposed to be in the mages' lair.

call the hardy boys.....

also it could have happened through the back door where that giant dog bed that i slept on was...the mages lair was connected to room 4.... maybe this is how someone got in with little noticing while it was vacant...was that unlocked? :x

I wasn't aware of that draft crew battle. None of the mages were there then?
Well Whitemage was in the room at first (he was one of the captains) however he left and came back ~15 minutes later.
During that time no mages were in the room (unless Ghetto Fabulous was sitting somewhere behind me but I don't think he was).
However it is as siresword says, most of us were tired.

You know, money of that quantity stolen is a felony I believe. I would look into fingerprinting the case and having the police run it through a database. Don't treat this like its just some passing problem, if someone came into your home and stole $1000 you bet your *** you would call the police.

EDIT: Yea...I'm not the only one to suggest this. Even more reason to do it though.

Let me get this straight... The bigger lockbox was broken but that didn't have the money that was stolen in it? So I guess fingerprinting the big one is probably pointless since it was the smaller one that had the money? Something isn't adding up, the culprit would have taken both envelopes for teams and crews if they were in the same lockbox. Are you sure the crew envelope was in the smaller lockbox?

I saw a lockbox on saturday and it was completely open. I think it was when I signed up for singles when I saw it open. I'm not sure which one it was but all i'm saying is that since it was in such plain sight the theif must have had an easy time tracking it. After all, anyone who signed up could see there was lots of money inside of it.

I kinda doubt this has anything to do with the lockbox at all and I think its like what WoZ said. Somewhere someone just saw it, grabbed it, and ran.

I hope you guys find it, good luck.

Also, what are you guys going to do to fix this problem if the money is not found? That money belongs to the people who won crews.

The mages had extra money that was going to be used towards the EC Circuit. It ended up being used to pay for crews, and really nothing is left. This isn't going to stop the circuit from happening, but it's certainly a setback.

im thinking that it wasn't taken out of the lockboxes themselves. Yes the lockbox to the larger was broken, but this does't explain at all as to why only the crews money could be taken. What makes the most sense is that the money had to have been stolen during the transfer process, and thus fingerprinting would be rather useless, given that the evidence that has prints on it wouldn't be with us.

i didnt go to this tourney but i am greatly hurt by this tragedy. honestly i dont think it was a smasher who did it (atleast i want to think that) maybe there was someone there who didnt really fit in if u know what i mean. everyone should think about this. ive been to tournaments all over the US and there is always someone u can think of.

also this is Grand Larceny/Theft - its pretty much when something equal to $1000 is stolen ie. car or $1000.

im thinking that it wasn't taken out of the lockboxes themselves.
So the said person broke into the outer lockbox, found another inside, and gave up? Then later encountered the envelope and took it?

edit: I doubt the police will do much/anything in this situation. Fingerprints wouldn't yield much considering I don't think most 18-year old smashers have criminal records (prints on file)

You be surprised how many under-18s have a criminal record.

Good luck to all involved in resolving this.

since the donate button won't show up on here :\

i've set up an e-mail and paypal account that i can either:
hand both over to any mage that wants to accept it or,
link my bank account to the paypal and transfer the money to any mage's bank account when donations have been given.

WOW. That is by far the biggest **** thing I have ever heard of. How are you going to an amazing tournament then steal the money of people who paid and also the money that was going to pay for stuff. Whoever did it congrats I think you are now hated more then Cash Mooney.

EDIT: The rooms were connected by the doors in the back. Do we have like a time period AM-PM when it happened. You should be able to get a list of everyone that went from the Hotel and also the tournament website.

IT'S A FELONY CALL THE COPS!

Also, how much was in each envelope? Maybe the thief figured if he took 1 no one would notice, which would explain why the teams envelope was still there. They probably took one thinking it wouldn't make a difference.

Did anyone sign up late? Maybe that would explain why an envelope was missing bc someone took it out to put in the late-fees and forgot to lock the box or put the envelope in the box altogether.

And, check through your sign in sheets. Many members of the community are law abidding citizens and certain players are credible enough to definately be X'ed out of the who-done-it list (e.g. the Mages themselves, WoZ, more likely the top 8 ish players).

The longer you wait to file a police report the harder it will be to get the money back.

i disagree with this. if u saw an envelope with a WAD OF $1000 inside, would u think taking it "wouldnt make much of a difference" to someone? and i also doubt that the thief only took the crews envelope because he thought no one would notice, because the mages not noticing this when they went to pay the crews winners would be impossible.

im not trying to sound rude or put u down or anything, just trying to be reasonable and find a logical explanation for this.

I'm sorry Omegawhitemage. People are horrible people, in the Smash community or not, they're everywhere. I hope you still <3 us and chill out with us anyways in the near future :).
I agree.

No need to blame the actions of one on many, that's narrow minded and petty. I'm sorry for the misfortune that you and the smashers suffered, though.

Wow, this is interesting. Do you think you could post some pictures or describe the lockboxes in more detail? Size, weight, conditions of the lock... Post pictures of the room itself, if possible. Where were the boxes concealed?

I'm just curious as to wether it would have been easier to just take the smaller box and stuff it into a backpack than it would have been to pick a second lock.

I gathered the mages together and came up with new facts.
  • The two transfers during singles registration was actually for teams and singles, in that order.
  • When suicidefox mentioned if there was late registration, I realized that I registered my crew but didn't pay for it until after the crews bracket started. I handed my money over to omegablackmage, who gave me change and took the money. He later wrapped the entire crews money and placed it inside the bigger lockbox, which at the time, held all the money. However, he didn't ask whitemage to lock the box right after. Whitemage says he locked it at some point, because he had to unlock it for teams registration.
  • The smaller lockbox was suppose to hold all the money for the envelopes. When omegawhitemage first opened it during the money transfer that occured during the singles registration, it was empty. This means that no transfer of the crews money occurred before then. It also means that the envelope would have still been in the bigger lockbox, but blue said he didn't see it in there. This means the incident happened even before singles registration, giving us a new timeframe.
  • Omegablackmage said when he was handling the money for the teams registration, he didn't remember seeing the crews envelope inside the bigger lockbox.

Our new timeframe is between 1 PM and 4 PM of Saturday afternoon, to when omegablackmage first sealed and placed the money in the lockbox, to teams registration. We've yet to talk about it. Thanks to suicidefox for coming up with the suggestion.

Also, the mages decided not to have the police involved because the tournament was technically illegal in CT (Gambling), and so would have complicated the matter. The mages and myself are going to get to the bottom of this.
