Post 1789! In 1789, The Estates General met for the first time since 1615. The legislature of France set about trying to reform the tax system so that the people are healthier and happier, and the government can work its way out of horrific national debt. Realizing that nothing is being accomplished, the Third Estate (the working class) begin meeting on their own to reform the government. They begin calling themselves the National Assembly. A bread riot in Paris turned ugly as the mob rushed to get weapons. They set upon the Bastille, who was willing to surrender peacefully. As the soldiers left the compound, they were all killed by the people who had taken the Bastille. The seven non-political prisoners held there were released and the people got weapons. Louis XVI, meanwhile, seeing the growing power of the National Assembly, orders the Estates-General disbanded, and makes the National Assembly the legislature of France. Unlike the count by social class in the Estates General, the National Assembly votes are done by head, giving the working and middle class a majority.

Georges Danton, orator of the revoltion and member of the Committee of Public Safety, argues that with such a time of victory upon them, The Terror may now come to an end. Maximillien Robespierre, fellow Committee member, argues that it is needed now more than ever. Danton is voted against 7-5. In protest, he resigns his position, and Robespierre has him arrested for 'counter-revolutionary actions.' He is given a group trial with 19 thieves and murderers and not allowed to speak. He is executed. His last words are: "Show the people my head, for it is a beautiful head." Robespierre, meanwhile, continues to hunt down 'traitors.' He has the National Convention purged of Hebertists and Enrages. In response, the remainder of the NC causes a coup under Robespierre, and pulls the support of the NC from him. He is arrested and executed. The Terror ends. His political party, the Sans-Coulatte, refuses to act on his behalf, and the Girond regain power. The NC is dissolved and a new government, the Directory, is created, based more around the American Constitution. This marks the begnning of the time of Thermidor.
Meanwhile, across the pond, Jefferson resigns as Secretary of State, infuriated with Washingon for issuing the Neutrality Proclamation and refusing to aid France in their time of need.
