I know how you feel mate, it takes me days or weeks (except for pikachu, that took only 2 hours) to draw parts of my avi, and its still not complete to where i can color it in.
I mostly blame where i take several tries on paper, most which just look dysfunctional and takes dedication to get them to look acceptable, and then i repeat the sketch on to the computer which results in more trial and error to get it to how it looks now

Meh i don't really have an opinion on any draw/sketch software, i dable through them but usually stick back to Photoshop.
If you got an high opinion of Paint Tool SAI then i may give it an try.

You can download a free trial. It's a great program because it lets you adjust your lines even after you put 'em down, and the paint bucket tool is positively brilliant. Other things too, but you'll figure those out if you give it a whirl.
