They're not so great. Yoshi isn't quite playing with a full deck of cards here.

First off, I'm really curious about the difference between his standing grab and his dashing grab. Specifically the start up, active grabbing frames, and the wind down lag in the two different grabs. If there's a difference in range then I'd like to know about that as well.

Help plz.

To keep things simple, I think of Yoshi's grabs like this:

Standard Grab: Slower start up, faster ending animation
Dash Grab: Faster start up, slower ending animation.

I personally prefer dash grabs more than the standard grab because if I land a grab I don't have to worry about the slower ending part of the grab animation. I'm fairly sure that it covers more range than standard grab also. Standard grab probably has more active grabbing frames, although again I can't be certain; but it just screams to be punished if you miss with it.

In many cases I prefer to use egg lay because of its fast animation and it can also be used in the air (while moving). On light/floatie characters I use egg lay more due to lack of grab combos which you can get away with on heavies/fastfallers.

:yoshi: I agree with Dsty; Egg Lay is infinitely safer and faster, even though it does not set up for combos.

I'll look up the grab frame data (I thought it was in Bringer's guide, but it's not), but standing grab and dash grab have about the same range and actually have very similar cooldown times. Now, the dash grab comes out quicker, but because it's SO fast, it can actually go through characters with thin bodies if you don't time it PERFECTLY. The standing grab hits more often (in regards to the grab hitting/going through characters), but is...well, you know.

If you want combos (and Yoshi's throws are amazing; at least his down and up)...which you NEED to beat those top tier matchups, you're going to have to get some regular grabs in from time to time. It's how he starts his death combos and how he ends stock. In general, if you're just looking for a reset and some extra damage, Egg Lay is the way to go.

Sweet.
Just so I can see this:

Grab

Start up: 1-17
Grab: 18-23 (Out for 6 frames)
Wind Down Lag: 24-79 (56 frames)

----------

Running Grab

Start up: 1-10
Grab: 11-16 (6 frames)
Wind down lag: 17-70 (56 frames)

------------

Soooo in terms of all around speed, Running Grab is better...

The running grab is a better option, assuming you weren't too close or far away from your target. If you can get a feel for the specific distance of it, it becomes quite a fast punishment for a missed L-cancel or other kinds of lag the opponent may be in. Dashdancing is great for creating this situation, both for baiting the opponent into missing an attack and giving you a dash to retaliate from.

all you need to know is that its not a great idea to use them, unless you are pronageawesomerificlisiousness andthey are at an average percent.if you are playing a pro he will get out of anygrab combos unless they are at a decent percent and if you want to absolutly rage you can do a couple of djc uairs to a techchased fair(only 1)to a nair or dairto downtilt for a gimp, other then that i wouldnt use it but not a great start and you have to be pronageawesomerificlisiousness like me
