Right here, not quite now
This is just an overview on the strategies most Yoshi mains use. Make sure to tell me if you want me to add anything.

1. Controls

The default controls have tap jump on, but most Yoshis prefer to turn this option OFF, since it may screw up his recovery (see 6.).

2. Approach and damage dealing

The egg toss is your friend. It is a very versatile projectile and should be used a lot more than you think. It also deals a quite a lot of damage.

Yoshi's grab game is very good. None of his throws have very high knockback or damage, but his both his dash grab and his pivot grab are easy attacks to pull off.

Yoshi's dair deals more damage than any other aerial attack in the game. If you're facing a big character, you might want to short hop, and activate bair before you start falling. This way, more attacks will hit. If you're facing a small opponent, don't bother using this attack offensively. It has a lot of landing lag and will probably not deal a lot of damage anyway. It does, however, have fairly high priority and is a weak spike.

The egg lay is a lot better than you might think. It works like a ranged grab, but it's really fast. If you're lucky, you might be able to hit your oppoent with an uair as he emerges from the egg.

3. Defense

Use the jab to get your opponent out of your face. Its hitbox comes out on frame 3, which makes it Yoshi's fastest attack.

Bair has a lot of priority and range, and spamming the attack can be effective if your oppoents don't know how to fight Yoshi.

Yoshi's shield sucks. As does his roll. That's why it's very important to spot dodge a lot more when using Yoshi.

4. Chaingrabbing

Yoshi can chaingrab some characters by grabbing, waiting for the grab release, then dash grabbing. For more information, check out this thread.

5. KOing

Start aiming for a KO at around 115% if you're facing a middle weight character (If you're playing against a character like Snake or Dedede who know how to DI, you might want to aim for 135%). Your five main killer moves are usmash, fsmash, uair, nair and down B.

Usmash and fsmash have similar knockback, but usmash is often easier to hit with. Uair can kill very early, but if you use it a lot, it's very easy for your opponent to predict it. Nair is a good horizontal KO move, but only right after the hitbox starts. Down B will not KO if you do it from the air.

Note that dsmash will NOT kill. With good DI, all characters can survive from the middle of Final Destination well over 200%.

6. Recovery

You get hit by a shuttle loop. What to do? Luckily, Yoshi's aerial movement and second jump are the best in the game, meaning recovering will be relatively easy.

The second jump has super armor, which protects you from knockback that doesn't send you further than about halfway across Final Destination.

DO NOT use the egg roll to recover. It will lower your aerial movement significantly and then put you in helpless state. There is one exception though (see 7.).

Many people find it easier to avoid being gimped if they use the egg toss before the double jump. This is to make sure Yoshi still has the double jump if he should get hit while recovering.

Note that if you have tap jump turned on, you are likely to lose your double jump if you use egg toss first.

7. DI

The concept of DI, Directional Influence, is to make sure you prevent your opponent from knocking you off the screen at high percentage. Check this thread for more info on DI.

Yoshi's fasted aerial attack is his uair, and is therefore the best option when you want to stop momentum.

There is another option for when you battle on walk-off stages: The egg roll. It will completely stop Yoshi's momentum, similar to Game and Watch's bucket brake. Just remember that this will put you in helpless state and should not be used on normal levels.

8. DR

Dragonic reverse is an advanced technique that allows you to slide a short distance along the ground, which has both offensive and defensive benefits. Make sure you learn how to play Yoshi before you attempt to learn this, since it is very hard to master.

Check out this thread for more.

While playing Yoshi,

DO NOT

... use fair a lot. It has a lot of startup lag, and very little range.
... use egg roll. An oppoent who knows how to face Yoshi knows that Yoshi can be hit out of his egg roll.
... spam down B. Make sure it's fresh when you go for the kill.

More to come.
