Would you want game save files from other games to unlock stuff earlier?

I really like this idea in smash, and if it is implented, it wouldn't be like Olimar's trophy in melee where you needed to have the game to get it. Basically a positive for the game owners while not excluding those who don't have it.

Something like this works nice. Worked in Mario Kart Wii, where you could unlock Rosalina either normally or by having an SMG save file, and it would work here too probably.

I still find it disturbing that you actually needed to have Pikmin game data in order to get everything in Melee.
If you want to be doubly disturbed, consider that there three trophies you could never get in Melee. There was the Devil trophy that later became an assist trophy in Brawl that was removed presumably because we Americans are too squeamish to handle something being called a devil (hilariously if memory serves, they actually censored the trophy description and then removed the trophy from the game anyway). There were also trophies for Mario riding Yoshi and Samus with her helmet off that just had no unlock condition and I think were supposed to be given out at some kind of events that never happened. Those are a shame since if you're a Mario or Metroid fan, those were actually really cool trophies.

As per this suggestion, it really makes no difference to me. I'll unlock everything eventually anyway, and I play most first party Nintendo stuff so I probably already have save data for most of what they might use anyway. As long as they don't do something really boneheaded like require you to own a different game to unlock a character or a stage (which I can't imagine them doing), it shouldn't matter in the tournament scene.

Not to sound like a know-it-all, but it was actually Tamagon, the protagonist of Devil World

"Oh hey, you have Sonic Lost World! Play 50 more V.S. matches for an early chance to unlock Sonic!"

I'd actually like this. But I wouldn't like:

"Oh hey, you have Sonic Lost World! Sonic is now unlocked!"

That's too easy.

As long as it's not the ONLY way of unlocking someone. SSB4 does not need to be like Skylanders.

It would be cool as long as it's not overdone. I very much enjoy the feeling of unlocking new characters and seeing the cutscenes. On top of that, Sakurai had previously stated that instead of the SSE, there will instead be intro cutscenes akin to the trailers for the newcomers. So that discredits the theory of all the characters being automatically unlocked from the beginning, thankfully. I feel like Sakurai knows full well that unlocking is one of the most important aspects of Smash Bros.

Spoiler alert: no.
I got the Wii U primarily for Smash. Mario 3D World is good and DKCTF was good but honestly there hasn't been much that is enticing to me at all.. And I'm pretty much a fanboy. I defended the Wii to the end despite how awful the game library was as a whole and how dismally made the system was.

Still, not cool to call someone not a true Nintendo fan just because they don't meet your own expectations and opinions. That's the kind of mentality that makes people think you hate your country if you dislike your government

Awful game library? I'm not sure we're talking about the same system. It had Super Mario Galaxy...

Again, it had mostly platformers. It's pretty lopsided in that regard. No 'real' racers, like one 'real' fighter, three RPGs, the list goes on. I guess you can excuse shooters because almost everybody has two modern consoles.

That would be interesting. I'd like to be able to unlock say Palutena based on my KI:U save data, and not work 50+ hours to get her, ETC.

I like this idea, but it needs more variety. Have alternate outfits (having 3D World unlocks a Cat Mario skin, for instance) and such unlocked with maybe an earlier chance to get a few characters here or there. Too many auto-unlocks would be anticlimactic for me, since I'm likely to buy most of what Nintendo puts out this year anyways. Then again, it's not like the Wii U is getting a flood of games, so being generous with the theoretical auto-unlocks wouldn't be so bad. Still, some variety would make it more special.

Mario Kart Wii's a real racer, it had Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, and even though it lacked depth, Castlevania: Judgement was pretty fun. And no need to excuse shooters, the three Metroid Primes.

Come on, man, you obviously know what he means. Mario Kart Wii is an RNG-heavy kart racer that was only ever designed to be casual multiplayer experience. If you're a fan of games like Gran Turismo or Forza then the Wii's got nothing for you. They could've at least had an F-Zero but they dropped the ball on that.

People who are fans of deep, competitive games like Street Fighter or Tekken aren't going to give a crap about Brawl or Castlevania Judgement. The only serious game on the system was TvC, but its life was cut short by the spiritual successor MvC3 which only released on non-Nintendo consoles. The only other fighting game on the Wii worth mentioning is Project M.

And obviously Metroid Prime is a totally different kind of game to TF2/CoD/Halo/whatever. It can't even be compared.

The Wii hate on this thread is disgusting. No More Heroes, Madworld, Xenoblade, Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros Wii, SSBB, Project M, Mario Strikers, Mario Kart, Wii Sports Resort, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Pokemon Battle Revolution, WarioWare Smooth Moves, Wario Land: Shake It! Super Paper Mario.

The Wii had nothing close to a shortage of amazing games.

I had to own two consoles, since a lot of games I like couldn't be released on Wii. But the Wii was awesome with awesome games. I'm not getting a WiiU just for Smash...I also want DK and the exclusive Sonic games. Not that any of this is ontopic at all...

I like old save bonuses.

I would be ok with this, as long as it it's not required. People shouldn't be forced to get another game just unlock a stage or character.

In that list you have: five platformers, one full RPG and another that pretty much needs another game to work, three 'Nintendo sports' games, one untraditional fighter and a hack of said fighter, two hack and slashes, one FPS action-adventure disguised as a FPS ('FPS' pretty much means online multiplayer nowadays) and a Wariowhatsit.

Most people in USA want 'real' FPSes, and in Japan it's RPGs. The Wii has basically neither. Unsurprisingly, there's people who want consoles with the most popular types of games.

Also, a disclaimer. I'm a tried and true Nintendo fan. I got the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U at launch and beaten all but two of those games. I own every Nintendo handheld except the Virtual boy and GB micro, not counting Japanese only ones like the backlit GB. I've played and beaten W101 (on the hardest difficultly too), F-Zero GX (not beaten lol), 101%ed KIU, and 100%ed SSBB. I didn't even own a PS3 until about a year ago because average shooters and RPGs bore me to death.

So don't even think I'm not a true Nintendo fan.

In some manners, I'd be down with this. As long as it doesn't make unlocking major things (Characters, stages etc) incredibly easy to the point where it requires next to no effort, I'm in support of this idea.

I have a rather sneaking suspicion that the 3DS will have a function similar to this for sure.
I imagine if you have an Animal Crossing New Leaf save file your villager will be able to take on the appearance of your own villager.
I feel the same would apply to a "Pokemon Trainer" if it was to return, I think some of the alt costumes would resemble how you dressed your character in your Pokemon X or Y games.

- Edit -

I suppose this would also apply to mii's if they are incorporated as well.

Save files being an alternate method of unlocking stuff? Sure, I don't mind.

Save files being the only method of unlocking stuff? Hell no. It was bad enough that Olimar's trophy in Melee had to be unlocked via Pikmin save. People shouldn't have to buy other games just to unlock stuff in another. It's just wrong.

It's not a matter of being "loyal" or "true" Nintendo fans. (Seriously, I hate this sort of behavior and the use of such a fallacious claim in an argument.)
I like many of Nintendo's games, but that doesn't mean I have to like all of their games or that all of their games interest me.

Nintendo fans can like Zelda, Metroid and Mario, but dislike Pokémon and Fire Emblem. Completely understandable as the former three are action based series whereas the latter two are turn based games. Forcing people to buy games they don't want/they aren't interested in is, in my opinion, unethical. There are better marketing strategies than this.

Unlikely since the Villager is using the City Folk design rather than the New Leaf one. They have different proportions.

It really all depends on how/ if they translate the programming over. They could disregard portions and keep facial features and clothing etc.
Also if/ how they decide to scale it. From a programmers point of view this obstacle dismal, if it's something they decided it could work. Also depending on how they portion, all they really need to worry about is hit box and grab box, and few other things.

I still find it disturbing that you actually needed to have Pikmin game data in order to get everything in Melee.
You also needed to have gone to 2 special distributions to get everything too.
If you brought your memory card, you would receive 2 special trophies; "Mario and Yoshi" with Mario riding Yoshi, and "Maskless Samus Aran," which was obviously Samus without her mask.

WiiU Games that I think Smash could use pre-existing data from are:
- Pikmin 3
- Wonderful 101 (assuming Wonder-Red)
- 3D World
- Tropical Freeze
- Wind Waker HD or another Zelda game if one is out
- MarioKart 8 (maybe)

As for 3DS Games:
- LM: Dark Moon
- 3D Land
- Pokémon X & Y
- Starfox 64
- Kirby Triple Deluxe
- Fire Emblem Awakening
- Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

I would really like that, as long as it doesn't make some things unobtainable for the people without the saves. Like if I have a WWHD save on my system, it lets me unlock Toon Link with 5 fewer VS. matches, or if my 3DS has an OoT3D save, I could get an OoT alt. costume for Link earlier than if I didn't.

I think it would be a spiffy idea they did have something similar with Melee with the Luigi's Mansion trophy.

I'd really like this idea, but as others have said, nothing exclusive, just make it similar to the early unlock method for Rosalina in Mario Kart Wii. Also, while I think this is sort of a given (especially since both versions are getting separate release dates), I feel that if you unlock a character in one version of the game, then get the other version, you should be able to link up to the version with the unlocked characters and get them in the new version. I feel this is a must-have feature, as there is literally no point to being forced to unlock a character for a second time, since the rosters in both versions are identical, and there is no surprise if you have already unlocked them.

I also don't think it should go for all characters. If Sonic and Mega Man are unlockable, they need it, as does Luigi. Having a save file of Sonic Lost World unlocks Sonic (this is really convenient, as Sonic Lost World is on both systems). Mega Man should be unlocked early if you own a Mega Man VC game. Luigi should be unlocked early if you have NSLU on Wii U, or Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS.

I don't think any of the other currently revealed characters will be unlockable. But if they have anymore suitable candidates, then that's fine. This is only something I think should be done for the characters that are revealed and promoted before release, but are unlockable, as well as possibly Jigglypuff, Ness, and Captain Falcon (as we KNOW they are coming back anyway).

I don't care much for this feature regarding trophies or anything (I consider them a completionist's quest and nothing more, because you can't use them in battle), but if it's in - If it's in good.
