Would you want character trials similar to SF4?

Smasboards suck
I stink at SF but one of the things I really liked were the character trials that introduced players to moves and combos. I'd think it be cool if they added that Smash. How about you guys?

Ugh, no thank you. There aren't any real combos in Smash anyways, I mean I guess you could chain together some attacks, but for me I don't think those are actual moves that can be used as a combo.

Plus in SF there's no heavy knockback, by the time you combo'd to 45% the CPU would be falling off the stage.

I think that break the targets and events are meant to help people explore with character's movement options and moveset. I personally think that they should bring back individualized target tests that require using certain moves to complete (young link's melee test is a brilliant example of design).

It all depends really. I would like it if we get to try out the new system. So we know what we are paying for, a lot of our daily concerns thinking about it's balance compared to Brawl or Melee.. BUT we all know it won't happen because Sakurai only release the game once it's Perfect.

Character tutorials/missions are something Smash just doesn't need. Smash is one of those games where I can pick up any character and play. I'll learn on my way.

A proper survival mode on the other hand would be neat!

This. Target Smash was the character trials (before Brawl ruined it).

I'd rather prefer trials relevant to the character that is reflective of the games they were in.

For example, trials for Mario could include:

Defeat Bowser with Peach not taking any damage.

Face against a lvl 8 Luigi who is always under FS effects.

Face against the Koopa kids (downsized different colored Bowsers)

Collect 10 Lumas (defeat 10 Lumas without damaging Rosalina)

Those are just some ideas.

Chain together attacks? If that's not a combo, I don't know what is. The key difference with Smash has been that, historically, we've had DI on attacks so it turns into a giant aerial oki game.

Anyway, we're still not sure on Smash 4's combo system. It might be more defined if Rosalina and Luma are any indication. We could see big changes like fixed knockback moves. Just saying this as a possibility, but it WOULD change how the game is played.

You've probably played the series for over ten years now. Of course you can just pick up and play.

That would be event matches. The kind of trials the OP is talking about is stuff like learning the basics of the character.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't individual Target Tests fulfill a similar role?

Not quite. Target Tests are great for going into the core of the character, but trials are for the combo game. You could probably make trials for tech chasing too.

Basically just have more events (Brawl's were such a letdown after Melee's, seemed like a half-baked job) and individualized target test. The platform thing in 64 was awesome too, but I'm not expecting it after two games of inactivity.

Yeah I know. I guess it would be more accurate to call them "Character Specific Event Matches". Each character has ten or fifteen matches to complete.
