Before I get started let me first say that I am a huge fan of Smash. I have been playing it for many years and I have invested countless hours into the game. I even have a smash tattoo on my arm (well, smash inspired tattoo).
So don't take what I am saying the wrong way. I will always love this series.

It has became all to clear to the community that Nintendo wishes to stamp out competitive smash. It has been this way for years. Between the dumbing down of Smash in Brawl, to the attack on Melee when it was brought back into the competitive scene several years ago and the fact that almost no major tournies will allow us to play P:M (largely believed to be Nintendo's fault) we can kind of grasp what the sad reality is.
Nintendo simply wants a party game and anyone who wants to do anything else with their game can simply screw off.
What depresses me is that a game like Mortal Kombat (which is IMO a lesser fighting game) is getting large tournements with very large prize pools. Halo 5, a god damn shooter, is trying to get into the competitive scene. The devs are trying to push for this as hard as possible.

Why?
E-Sports is getting bigger, it is getting better and it is getting more exciting. There is a lot of money to be made in tickets, streams, merchandise and free promotion of the game being played. Right now the computer gamers are in the lead with titles such as Dota and LoL. These games have people who play the game for a living, and they make good money. Smash on the other hand, well you better get first place or you are not getting anything. The reason being is that the players at the highest level all get salaries from their respective teams. The winnings go to the teams company and some of it goes to the players. This is about like an actual sports team.
Smash doesn't have this because no one is putting forth the big bucks.

In the very near future where you can make real good money at being a pro gamer is common place, Smash will be a forgotten foot note. Which is sad. If Nintendo would have made SSBB and Smash 4 to be more like Melee and promoted it in the competitive scene we would currently be walking all over other fighting games. Just look at how much the scene is still flourishing right now, and it is backed only by the community! We are all very loyal to our game, its history and its origins.

So that bring me to my actual question. If there was a game that played almost exactly like P:M, was balanced, had characters that are close to your current favorites (as far as fighting styles go), had great music and was on the computer (obviously supporting a controller); would you play it? I'm talking about a fighter that would take after current MOBA's and use a free to play style.
Lets say that this game had the scene of something like Dota and you could try and become pro and bring in cash. Would you be willing too, or are you just in love with the history of the characters in Smash and the history of Smash itself?

Me? TBH, I don't know if I would, but I would like to think that I would.
It would have to have content other than just a competitive side. Allowing it to be on the computer would allow you to grasp a larger horizon. It would allow more game modes that you cannot simply do on a shared screen. It would be interesting to see where it would go and what it would evolve into.

TL;DR, me angry. me want punch nintendo

Maybe. It'd be interesting to try out new mechanics. I've already played Brawlhalla.

The sooner we all move to DreamMix TV World Fighters (AKA the greatest fighting game ever to grace mankind), the better. It's got Simon Belmont, Optimus Prime, Bomberman, Solid Snake, AND the Gradius Moai.

MASTERPIECE.

You seem to be ignoring the changes made towards Smash 4, and the recent sponsorship of Majors such as APEX, EVO, and The Big House. They have been promoting the competitive scene since the Invitational last year, even if it is focused primarily on Smash 4.

You're also forgetting the increase of Pot Size due to more people participating in tournaments.
