Legend of Zelda Wind Waker texture help?

Hey all! I recently began a project in which I want to edit/mod the textures in Wind Waker. I've already done it to Super Smash Bros. Melee, so I know what it's like to edit code and all that, but there's a small problem... I have NO idea where any textures go.

You see, in Super Smash Bros. Melee, there are all these nice, simple .dat files. There is a .dat file for each colored player. For example, Blue Mario.dat, Yellow Mario.dat, etc.. So, if I wanted to edit the Blue Mario's textures, I would simply edit the Blue Mario.dat file. This is not the case with Wind Waker.

Does anyone know where Link's texture data is in Wind Waker? Or can anyone point me in the right direction?

THANKS! :)

I figured that with the comprehensive guides on Melee modding, it was worth a shot. I'll wait for some other answers, thanks. :)

I personally have no idea, but I would love to know how to edit the textures in WW and TP. If you're lucky, someone else may know. I've researched methods to do so and have found absolutely nothing. Either no one has discovered a way, or it's impossible. I like to think the former :ohwell:

WOW! Man, I'd love to retexture WW or TP. Iirc, Djipi is the same guy who made the cel-shaded pack for OoT.

If they could retexture Link to look like Toon Link in Brawl, oh man that would be too good.

Yep, that's the same guy. :)

So, does anyone have any idea how I can do something like this? I would like to re-texture Link. I've found his clothing textures and everything:

It's just a matter of converting it and sticking the code in the right place...

Dude, if you could rip all the textures, pack 'em up and upload to megaupload, I would be forever thankful. We could start a retexture project!

All the textures won't be happening, not anytime soon at least. To get them, I use the Dolphin emulator, which runs VERY slowly on my computer. It's no big deal to get a few things, like Link's clothes, or perhaps a monster or two, but I can't play the game for very long. It's just too slow.

Sorry. :(

Besides! We don't know how to re-texture Wind Waker. That's what this topic is supposed to be about. :p

Aye, so to rip the textures, you have to actually travel to the different locations, just like ripping textures from N64 games worked. Though if we could at least find all the textures, we could get to work on editing them. It's at least some kind of progress.

If you have the GCN version of TP, could you try and rip some textures from it just for the sake of doing so? I have the ripped models and textures for numerous characters, enemies, and locations, but that won't do me any good in this pursuit.

I wouldn't consider it progress. Until we know for sure which textures go into which .dat file and where, it's more like a waste of time. I'd love to help if I could, but until we know what we're doing, I don't really want to be a part of it. I'm sorry. :/

I also have the GC version of TP, but it's on a disc, not my computer. I'd have to go through the process of ripping it. Again, though: Dolphin plays very, very slowly for me. I can't be of much help as far as getting a bunch of textures goes. It's a struggle to even get a few good ones. Dolphin likes to dump textures in the wrong format.

Here's the skinny, gentlemen!

I've recently learned how to hack better/with more file types (thank you, NSMB Wii), so I decided to give Wind Waker another try. It was a good choice.

After using GC-Tool, I found the file that SHOULD contain Link's textures: Link.arc. Unfortunately, the program I used to play around with NSMBW's .arc files refuses to work with Link.arc. Judging by all the textures that are floating around and all the retexture projects I've seen, there IS a way to get the .arc file working.

Does anyone know which program(s) can handle GAMECUBE .arc files properly? I've looked and gone through about six different programs already, none of which worked.

You really don't know what you're doing do you? To extract gamecube arc files you need the szs tools from this page. http://amnoid.de/gc/index.html
Finally, that hires shot of windwaker was done in dolphin, a gamecube and wii emulator, that has an alternate texture loading function. You set it to dump textures to tga and then you edit them and paste them into the load folder. I'm currently working on a wind waker style mod for twilight princess. Should be posting a Youtube video today actually.

FORGOT ABOUT THIS TOPIC! :D

Thanks for being a jerk about it, Dahrem. I'll look into the program you recommended, though.

Anyway, I began editing textures in Brawl months ago (which is super easy in comparison). I actually hacked the normal and red Toon Link to hell and back, each which nice results. I'm still nowhere close to hacking Wind Waker, though. Gamecube stuff is just trickier.

The overall idea (since I was unclear before) is to actually alter the game .iso itself, NOT use Dolphin. I like being able to burn my custom .iso's to a disc (or in Brawl's case, put it on a USB drive) and play it, no special programs/tricks required (Gecko, etc.).

So. Yeah. That's where I am right now. I'll go back and look at Wind Waker now that I'm a little more familiar with texture hacking.

Thanks everyone for your help and interest so far!

This isn't the place for this, but you can either use programs on the Wii to automatically replace textures while you play (which is pretty easy, I believe) or actually hack the .iso (which I prefer). Either way, hit up Google and you'll find TONS of guides. :)
