To answer the thread's title,

Well, I believe I read once that there were sound files for the screams of each character if they are launched at a high velocity/percent but they just weren't implemented. I don't actually remmeber where I read that so I might just be imagining things, but if it's true maybe it was just overlooked and wasn't implemented and it will return this time around.

Anyways we have a new mechanic that gets more profound as the percent of the character becomes higher/the character is launched at a higher velocity; the new visual trails characters leave while on the air

This is definitely true. Among the many things Project: M does, one of the less-noticed is the implementation of all those unused sounds on the disk. Fox's is hilarious - he sounds like someone is stirring up his insides with a length of barbed wire. It's absolutely agonized.
