THANK YOU. Someone who spouts sense on this board. I'd give you a wing if I didn't chow them down already :D
Wow, thanks. :D

He never said that there would be 40-50 characters. Please link me to where he said this.
It was an interview he did sometime... Um... I think it was in a magazine. Maybe I was mistaken. :-/

It has been mentioned several times on this board that Sakurai said that, but it could have been a misinterpretation of something else he said. We all know that happens a lot.

In any case, I wasn't able to find an interview where he mentions the number of characters he'd like to have in Brawl. Thanks for catching me on that. :D I shouldn't have posted that without proof.

Well, more is better, but I don't believe having 40-50 characters is such a issue. Maybe 70-100 is a problem, but there's no problem having about 40 characters on there.

Or, you know, expect more from a game that spent 27 months in development and had 700 play a role in making it, perhaps... Also, if can give us 300 Assist Trophy, 100 pokeball pokemon, a rumored 400 music tracks, a rumored 41 stages, online options for modes that really didn't need online in the first place (homerun contest, anyone), probably 600 trophies, probably just as many stickers that have individual powerups, probably 20-25 game demos for games that most people have played (let alone beaten), different difficulty settings for all the events and stadium modes, a spectator mode (because we all know how much that was needed...), probably 75-100 items, etc then why can't they make an imaginative roster that doesn't make most people want to chug a jug of anti-freeze? It's the not the number of characters that's the problem, it's the fact that all but three characters (and two of them even based on other characters) are either from the past games or where characters they "forgot" to add in Melee (ie; Pit, Metaknight, Wario, King Dedede, Snake, Sonic, Diddy Kong, Pokemon Trainer, and Wolf).
Took the words out of my mouth.

dustman, no matter how pessimistic you are about newcomers, thinking there will only be 2-4 more characters total is ridiculous. Ness, Jigglypuff and Lucario have already been confirmed, that's 26(not counting transformations). There are still veterans that are complete no-brainers:

Captain Falcon
Luigi
Mr. Game & Watch
Ganondorf

That makes 30. It would be absolutely stupid for any of those characters not to be added(except maybe G&W who is basically confirmed via the icons). There's no way they'll remove that many veterans. 35 characters is a very substantial roster and people who whine about it are just spoiled by the number of newcomers they showed us on the Dojo. But to think that there will be less than that is just unrealistically pessimistic.

I expect 40-42 that would be a very acceptable number of characters if this is going to be the last smash ... made by him at least...

I mean really 35 ... meh ok but 35 just doesn't feel like the right number for all the other huge increases the game has got ... 35 feels very mediocre/mild as far as increases go ... and less than 35 is ridiculous

You guys have an incredible talent for making up Sakurai quotes. Link me to where he said that and I'll believe it.

This certainly seems to be the case. <.<

I have a feeling someone on this forum made up the "Sakurai wants 40-50 characters in Brawl" quote. Many people, including myself, fell for it.

If anyone can find a link to prove he said that it will be very helpful. I'll continue to look, as well.

My thoughts exactly. Someone makes up a quote and others use it as if it's fact.

I do think the rooster will be pretty huge. At least 7 feet tall, weighing around 340 pounds. Seriously though, the roster will probably exceed 40. They wouldn't have shown this many characters if they plan on adding only a few more. Just a hunch.

Ok, im a long time reader first time writer (ltrftw)

Im simply wondering, why are the expections to the rooster so high?
35 characters, 42 characters WTF??
That is dream thinking as far as i can see.
This far, we 24 (?) characters are announced.
As far as i can see, there will probably be 2-4 characters more as a surprise, but that's it.

1. Characters are the main selling point of the game.
2. Melee's roster had DOUBLE the amount of characters that Smash 64 had, and Melee was RUSHED.
3. Brawl has almost TRIPLE the development time that Melee had.
4. Brawl has a MUCH BIGGER team working on it than Melee had.
5. Brawl has been delayed, TWICE.
6. Why have so many starting characters and only 2-4 unlockables? If this was the case, they wouldn't have revealed Ice Climbers, Diddy Kong, Wario, DeDeDe, Meta Knight and Olimar. Those characters would've been perfect unlockables.
7. Sakurai/Iwata have stated the the amount of playable characters is also massive, pretty much on par with the content we've already seen. They certainly didn't lie when they said they "had thought of everything", cause the content is insane. Stage Builder, Assist Trophies, Pokeballs, Past Stages, Trophies, Stickers, Sticker-powerups, Coin Launcher, Wifi, a complete Singleplayer Mode, and on top of that, almost everything can be done on Co-op, even hitting the sandbag. They wouldn't call the 'side-content' massive and be completely right, and then say the amount of playable characters is massive as well, and be lying.

It just doesn't add up to have a small roster. I'm counting on 40 AT LEAST.
But I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be 50 characters or more, cause that's how they make it sound.

This thread had better become an inside joke for the boards from here on out.

Soru. my god. That was the greatest thing I have ever seen on this site.

We really should be using this thread for nothing more than rooster jokes after that. Seriously.

If there are more than 35 characters, I'd be surprised and my guess it'd be mostly clones (Ness and the like) and returning people (Ness and the like). Maybe a surprise character or 2. But even it if is 35, I'll be happy.

.
Two games =/= a pattern. There's only so much interesting characters you can put in.

You guys are trying to hard to justify a lot of characters here. Remember it's not only the characters this game is about, but the overall nostalgia of characters, stages, assist trophies, SSE, EVERYTHING. Not just characters.

Oh, shut up. Joke's been made too much already. No offense, but it's really lame now and interrupts a topic that would normally be good.

I did notice something though, since there was 12 character in SSB64, and 25 in SSBM, which was 13 characters that was added, since the characters was almost doubled in SSBM it could be doubled again, thus making at least 45-50 characters at the most.

Good job on ignoring all my other points.

Eh, your other points don't state anything else - this game has had more time investment than Melee, thus should have a huge roster. That, and the opinion-based interpretation of "massive". That's why I didn't quote them.

If there are 35 balanced characters, it's better then 48 unbalanced.

If it wasn't, there might as well be 5 characters or so, as they would be the only ones that people would use.
