Why Is Clone Such an Ugly Word?

I don't have the source, but I'm pretty sure Sakurai has said that the amount of time it takes to put in 1 original character is roughly the amount of time it takes to put in 6 clones, or whatever the number is. If it were up to me, I'd sac one newcomer from Smash 4 in place of 6 boring clones.

Yes, that's right. I'd rather have clones.

So long as they really tweak the stats around, like say having a super speedy vs a super heavy clone.

Also, clones have better odds of being in the next installment, I think. Who knows if Ganondorf, Falco, or Toon Linke (clearly inspired by Young Link) would have been in Brawl if not in Melee? And Roy and Doc were both planned, as were Plusle and Minun (the 3rd gen, spiritual successor to Pichu.)

I like big rosters, and so I like clones. It's more fun to unlock more characters.

What's stopping you from playing Street Fighter 4 then? I'm sure you'd enjoy the 10s of Hadouken clones. Big rosters don't always mean better.....

Balancing is a major factor. Aesthetics is a major factor. Gameplay is a major factor. I would honestly feel like I'd be playing against the same character every time besides the fact that it looks different. Sorry, but this is a poor idea. Copy / paste is never appreciated in any type of industry.....

I will say this though... If making a near-clone allowed there to be a character from a franchise that would otherwise be completely unrepresented (as much as it makes no sense at all), I would probably take that over a clone that's just adding to a franchise that already has plenty of characters. That's just me.

Agreed. I would rather unlock 5 unique characters from various franchises than 15 clones.

Haha okay well I don't want 10 clones of the same character. But if we had, like 6 different clones of different characters... that's great. 6 clones in place of 1 other character is a good tradeoff in my book. That said, though, I don't think I wouldnt want more than that.

I don't mind clones as long as it does justice to the character and the character is deserving enough to get in. My 2 cents.

I REALLY don't buy that statistic. Not with brawl clones.

It was during Melee's development, but I'm pretty sure what he supposedly said was along the lines of he could have added six characters who were clones, or finished one unique character. I think King Dedede was that character. But I don't have a link for you.

Clones are very common in fighting games, that being said, it ne'er surprises me when they are made.

The only clone in Brawl I was somewhat disappointed with was Ganondorf; I was really hoping he would at least use his sword. (Shrugs) Then again, if he did, he would probably be an Ike clone.

I think the consensus is that clones are filler and restrict diversity in playstyle between characters, and take up roster slots from other underrepresented characters and franchises. While Brawl took strides to reduce similarities, at the end of the day, Falco, Wolf, Lucas and Toon Link are all still similar to their counterparts. Most people would rather have completely new characters instead.

And then there's Ganondorf. Who is a valid character in his own right, but is just robbed of potential by being a clone.

Come on Sakurai. The man needs his hover jump and energy balls.
