Why in Heck is He a Lightweight

I was wondering, what do you think is the reasoning behind making Falco a lightweight? Light bones and muscles? Being a bird? What's strange is that Sonic, who's less built than him, is a MIDDLEWEIGHT! There's gotta be a reason.
