Why doesn't Duck Hunt Dog kill Duck Hunt Duck?

Actually the dog just grabs the duck after you shoot it in the original game. I guess the dog and duck are friends now.

The dog laughs at you when you fail to shoot the duck. He's supporting his buddy by taunting you. They were always friends! They just finally made their big break~

It's like the Tom and Jerry Movie all over again... except that this is cool, unlike the movie.

I think it has more to do with how they represent the game (and the Zapper by extension) more than the characters themselves. Like how Nana and Popo are called "Ice Climbers" instead of "Nana and Popo". Plus, Doggie and Ducky have had decades to work out their differences.
