Why does Melee have input lag on TVs that aren't CRT?

I only have a plasma tv to play melee on, and i've heard it has input lag on newer tvs like a plasma tv. How come it does? Is there any way I can play without input lag on plasma tv by adjusting settings or something?

The display lag is caused by upscaling, deinterlacing, and image processing. You can remove the deinterlacing by using component cables on a Wii (~$20) and if you set the TV to game mode, it'll remove image doctoring which is basically your TV doing some extra processing to make the picture look prettier. Your TV will still lag, but at least not as much as before

If you have some money and the ability, go to a thrift shop and buy a CRT. Those have no lag. They only cost $5-$10

you can normally get a cheap, small CRT from a store like Goodwill for $1 or cheaper, in case you live close to a Goodwill. Playing Melee on an HDTV is pretty terrible because of the lag.

Does Project m also have input lag on Plasma Tvs too?

It’s the technology. CRT has native signal delay of 670 nanoseconds. The fastest LCDs of today have something like 5 milliseconds in perfect settings (which is never the case for Melee). So on top of that, you have deinterlace lag, conversion lag, processing etc.

You can find people trying to get rid of CRTs on CraigsList, often for free. Just make sure it has composite plugs (the red, yellow, and white jacks).

*composite

Component cables are the red/blue/green video + red/white audio cables
