Well, since the release date is now after chirstmas, I was caught off guard. Since it was to come out just in time for christmas, I wasn't planning to buy that many games before its release, since I know I'll be playing brawl for a big chunk of my time when it hits stores, so buying games I'll only play for a week or less (I'm looking at you, Heavenly Sword) seemed like a waste of money, but know I have to add some the this list. In the mean time, I DO have a list of games that I should be playing before brawl comes out:

Call of Duty 4 (X360)
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Super Mario Galaxy
Assassin's Creed (X360)
Guitar Hero III (Wii)
Bioshock (X360)

Whilst in the process of updating this list, I came to ask myself a question: brawl's unique characters have lengthty histories (at least most of them), and why not play their respective games? So, I want to go back and play some games that would help me get to know the brawl party better. What games would you recommend I buy? I'm already familiar with the following series:

Legend of Zelda (All game accounted for here!)
Wario Ware
Does play the NES Kid Icaurs count?
Metroid
The US Fire Emblem games
Pokemon
Mario (Does he have any sort of canon story?)

What games would best introduce me to the other series? Also, what fire emblem game(s) should I play? and while we're at it, what games are you playing until Brawl comes out?

Was there a thread like this before? I forget.

I personally am planning on buying Super Mario Galaxy ASAP. I've heard it is amazing and it should last me a while. Also, I am not sure when Mario Kart comes out-i know it is early 08 but i don't know if it is before brawl or after.

On what games you should play if yiu have a SNES, you should try the Kirby and Donkey Kong Country games. All of which are great.

you can get two very different perspectives on Sonic by playing his first ever game, Sonic the Hedgehog, and his 2006 game of the same name...although myself and two of my friends are about the only people I have ever met that liked the 06 one. cant go wrong with the original...its made of win.

the metal gear games would probably be good ones to do too, and of course, you can always go back and play some mario. I am planning on replaying luigis mansion soon actually.

I'd probably get Mario Galaxy if not for the fact that I never have any money. I spent all I had on preordering Brawl. xD

...I SO need a job... =P

Anywhoo... Galaxy might be interesting for me especially if I could get it because beleive it or not, I've never played any of the 3-D Mario games! 64 or Sunshine!

But since that isn't the case I'll probably spend my time with Melee and Smash64, various Zelda titles (aka all of them except the CD-I's), and some other doo-dads here and there.

I'm actually in the process of acquiring as many games with brawl characters in it as possible off of the Virtual Console. I want to try out at least one game for every character before I get Brawl. a Zelda game's next on my list.

Don't you EVER refer to the CD-I games as "Zelda titles" in any way, shape, or form. They are stinkin' piles of humancrap, and will forever remain so. Are we clear on that? Good.

I'm definitely going to try out Galaxy when I get the chance. It looks like a lot of fun.

I rented Path of Radiance recently to familiarize myself with the Fire Emblem games a little bit, its a great game but sadly I didn't get to beat it due to college and stuff. I only got to point right after Ike's father died, and I assume thats fairly early in the game.

I want to get Guitar Hero III, but I have no monies to spare for it :(

You should catch up on some kirby games, I personally thought Kirby 64 was really fun, you might want to try that.

also, try FE 1/3 and/or 6, that way you'll hate roy more and get to know how gay marth is.

FE 4 is still my favorite one though, either that or FE 8.

Someone isn't fond of SSBM's FE reps.

I actually signed up for GameFly, just to brush up on my Nintendo history of the past 6 years in preparation for Brawl.

I'm one of those weird Smashers who likes to know everything about every franchise so I can pick out obscure references, and not "main" a character without knowing a **** thing about them.

Unless we know Japanese I don't think we can play Marth's and Roy's games... well I guess there are some "fan translated" versions, but I don't trust "fans"...

I have a LOT to play in the meanwhile, personally:

Guitar Hero III, Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Prime 3, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Link to the Past (VC), Super Metroid (VC)...

...Yep, I think I can hold out until 2-10.

Not yet, my friend, not yet...

But if you're looking for some GC games with Brawl characters, I suggest the Sonic Adventures, Sonic Mega Collection, or Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. All of them are pretty cheap right now, and I'm assuming you have Sunshine and Prime cause you're a good fanboy :)

I'll be spending my waiting time by replaying MGS3 numerous times, CastleVania X Dracula Chronicles, and Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles when it comes out.

Alright let's see which games are the best on the respective franchises so you get to know your Brawlers. :p

I'm only doing this for the confirmed characters so bare with me:

Kid Icarus - Kid Icarus NES (no brainer, the game is fun though some people might think it
hasn't aged well, it's quite challenging also, a good game, imo)

Wario - Wario Land GB (No, seriously I refuse to accept this Wario Ware thingy! Wario comes from the Mario franchise and it's where all began)

Zero Suit Samus - Zero Mission GBA (This is the only game (besides the original of course but they're the same game, technically) where you play as Zamus)

Ike - Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance GC (Ah, such a good game)

Pokémon Trainer - None (Pokémon Trainer has no character development, I suppose you could say he's Red so you can always play Pokémon Blue/Yellow/Green but you're not going to get to know him much)

Diddy Kong - Donkey Kong Country SNES and Donkey Kong 64 (No brainer, there's also DKC2.)

Metaknight - I don't know. (Never was a huge fan of the Kirby games)

Snake - Metal Gear 1/2 NES and Metal Gear Solid/Twin Snakes PSX/GC (Some could argue about Sons of Liberty but Snake doesn't have that much development there)

Lucas - Mother 3 GBA (This one will be hard to play, it's a JPN release only. Unless you're up for a fan translation you're screwed. :p)

Sonic - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Genesis and Sonic Adventure 2 DC/GC (First time Super Sonic and Tails appearance and last meaningful appearance of the blue blur. Both are great games. Try them out.)

King Dedede - I don't know.

Mario - Super Mario Bros. 3 NES and Super Mario 64 N64

Link - Twilight Princess GC (Urk! Where's my Ocarina of Time Link?)

Kirby - Uhm... I dunno.

Pikachu - Watch the anime.

Fox - Starfox 64 N64 (Best Starfox game ever.)

Samus - Super Metroid SNES (Hands down the best Metroid game ever)

Zelda - Ocarina of Time N64 (Since you're playing Twilight Princess for Link play the best game in the entire franchise)

Bowser - Super Mario 64 N64

Donkey Kong - Donkey Kong Country SNES and Donkey Kong 64 N64

Yoshi - Super Mario World and Yoshi's Story SNES

Peach - Uhm... Princess Peach or sumthing?

Ice Climbers - Ice Climbers NES (FU ALL! This game is awesome. I played it a lot when I was little, it was so **** hard. xD)

ok, I've played some of those, but I think that I'll be playing me some FE, i haven't played the 3D FE's and am ashamed of it. I do, however, pertain that the 2D ones are better because of the battle animations.

yeah, that's one of the main things that turned me off on it. Unlike AWDS, I NEVER turned off animations in FE because watching a hero's critical was always fun to watch.

Hmm... I graduate from college 12 days after Brawl comes out. I have to work on my port folio now so I have some cool things to make myself look desirable to places I apply at.

Also, other than 3d modeling characters, weapons, and objects, generating lines and lines of code, making Audio songs, and pretending I have a social life I've found this.

November is national Novel Writer's month! I just started today, I'm a bit late, but I've already got over 3,000 words.

--

Wait what? Videogames to occupy my time... uh Funny story, after coming to Collins College for a degree in Game Design the only games I ever have the desire to play are Smash Bros and Zelda...

Collins killed my passion for gaming.

I'm just going to haul up in a bunker with Super Mario Galaxy. After getting all 120 stars the first time I'm gonna go back through it as Luigi. The only other game I considered was perhaps a game featuring Snake since (believe it or not) I've never played one and it would be cool to get a little acquainted. Is there a particular game that would stand out to fans of the series?

I know you don't have anything below GC/GBA, but if "Kirby Superstar" (SNES) appears on Virtual Console, get it. It's a great Kirby game and it's also the 1st (I think...) with Metaknight's ship.
