Smash Master
This is for 1v1 play in general. You can consider it viable for whatever reason, I'm just curious as to what people think makes a stage viable when playing with friends or whoever.
My list (of stages generally played when I'm playing at college with friends) would be as follows:
Battlefield - Boring design but straightforward for fights.
Castle Siege - The transitions are rarely an issue when my friends and I play, and the tilt of the second form isn't significant enough to mess up most characters. Plus it's my favorite series' only stage.
Distant Planet - Large, but not too large, and fairly open. No reason to dislike it once I get rid of Pikmin's boring music. Works great for doubles.
Dracula's Castle - Interesting platform movement, and large, but it doesn't seem any larger on the base than Final Destination. The stage's tendency to hide recovering characters is annoying sometimes, but not really an issue. Works well for doubles.
Dreamland - Battlefield with Wispy being annoying, no reason to dislike it.
Final Destination - I hate the stage for being boring, but at least it makes for straightforward matches.
Fountain of Dreams - Like Battlefield but with moving platforms. Makes things interesting.
Green Hill Zone - At least it's a simple stage. Bearable once I change the music. The swinging platform makes for interesting moments.
Halberd - The cannon is fun but very easy to avoid, and the transformations make things more interesting.
Lylat - I never choose it because I hate the corners (as a Marth player), but at least it doesn't tilt any more.
Metal Cavern - Small, but the uneven floor makes things interesting, and the far walls make offstage chasing more frequent and interesting.
Norfair - Running and hiding isn't much an issue in my group, despite the circular layout. No real features that would make us dislike it.
Stadium 1 - The transformations keep matches interesting, but it's an otherwise simple stage. The aesthetic is cool, too.
Stadium 2 - Stadium 1 without transformations.
Rumble Falls - Large stage with unique platform distributions, makes for interesting matches and works great for doubles.
Skyloft - Unique(ish) platform setup, no reason to dislike it.
Skyworld - Unique platform placement, no reason to dislike it.
Smashville - Final Destination but more interesting.
Wario Ware - Unique platform placement.
Yoshi's Island - Cycling platform arrangements, and the occasional ghost for help.
Yoshi's Story - Simple platform layout, the cloud for unpredictability.
