Well, I would want to transfer more movement options, or just options in general, like OoS options and whatnot.

L-canceling by far is the most powerful mechanic in Melee, but honestly I feel like that longer dash dances and wavelanding deserves more of a return. L-canceling has soooo much reward at no cost, not broken, but still insanely powerful and free to use which is never good for any game imo. Das dancing and wavelanding does have for benefits than risk, but it promotes more movement options and mindgames and that's what we should promote.

Anyways, if we are talking about Smash specifically, DI (or a DI equivalent) NEEDS to come back. There are just too many horrible true combos without it (Mario's U-tilt->D-throw a few times to Uairs to Up-B ≈ 60-70%).

If we are talking about fighting games in general, I'd like to see how JC'd moves would work. It would vastly increase the range on people's moves and could create some interesting combos. You would have to make the game with that in mind, though, because a lot of fighting games I would add that to would make at least one character super OP based on how big their hitboxes are compared to the rest of the cast.

EDIT: Also, I agree L-Cancelling is important, but didn't initially mention it because it had already been brought up.

EDIT 2: Never mind, @ EPsilon933 EPsilon933 is a Sir. I just saw a match with both him and a facecam. I apologize for following your Smashboards profile gender alone and not double-checking against a video earlier. In the words of Chillin: "My B".

i think the most important aspects would probably be; L Cancelling, Teching ability when hit into the stage or ground, and Smash DI, although all techniques are important I find these to be most beneficial in the early stages

I think ledge occupancy and recovery limits are the two most important mechanics in melee.

You can work around air dodges and a lack of L-cancelling, but the ability to occupy a ledge and recoveries you can actually gimp are basically essential for making a smash game feel as tight as melee.

For evidence of this, look at the most recent PM change. You can actually ledgeguard and gimp people now that recoveries are less enormous. Ledeguarding and gimps allow a game to have a variety successful characters that do not explicitly have moves with high KO potential, and variety is awesome.
