Let me give my opinion here. There are three great games for parties, and then there are two even better game series for parties. I'll begin with the games: Goldeneye. Everyone loves the shoot 'em up types of games, and 007 is no exception. With the wide variety of weapons and levels, you won't get tired of playing. Unless you really suck and get the "Most Harmless" award 19 times out of 20. (Believe me, it's happened to a friend.) Perfect Dark also goes along in this category, so I won't explain this one much. Different levels and more diverse weaponry allow for a variation on a beloved party game. Thirdly, there's StarFox 64. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't love this game. Not many levels, and only three possible types of "vehicles" (if you want to call walking a vehicle...) to choose from, but the general aspect of large modes of transportation being blown up by weapons of mass destruction keeps me and many others enthralled.
Now, I mentioned that there were two series of games that have been used in several parties of my own and my friends as well, and if I know true video game fans, they love these as well. The first series is the Smash Bros. series. Although only having released 2 games, you get to beat the living daylights out of your opponents. I think it's pretty plain and simple. The wide variety of characters and their unique attacks and abilities, along with the item arsenal, has caught the attention of the entire gaming world. The second, my personal favorite, and what I consider to be the ULTIMATE PARTY GAME series, is the Bomberman saga. Dating all the way back to the original "Bomberman" for the NES, the small, mute, humble little man we know as Bomberman has captivated the hearts of millions with his giant explosions. As the series progressed into the SNES, the four-player adapter made the game available to 4 combatants at one time. Even if you wanted to play Vs. Mode but had no opponents, the computer would fill in for them. The best Bomberman for that system would be "Super Bomberman 2." A new leap came with the release of "Bomberman 64" for Nintendo 64. The same basic concept put into a 3D virtual world allowed our beloved demolitions specialist to gain new abilities, and even make new friends as well as enemies. (However, most good series have a flop; for this one it was the detestable "Bomberman Hero." Even multiplayer mode was removed! You can't do this to a successful party game.) Even the PS and GBC were able to experience the joy of explosives. Also, a game was made for the PC, complete with internet play ("Atomic Bomberman"). This is why I feel that Bomberman was, is, and always will be the original and ULTIMATE party game. If you haven't played this game yet, you desparately need to. Even the Adventure mode is fun.
*My personal pick for the best Bomberman game is "Bomberman 64."
