Where Sandbagging Originated

There are two top contenders for this position. On one end, we have Joe Bushman, master of the Home Run Contest, dominating Ganondorf player, and expert Diablo2 Botter. Contrasting Joe Bushman is Isaiah, legendary sandbagger, prestidigitator of falcon frolicking, and Cris Angels level of Mindfreaking.

Sandbagging could come from Joe Bushman's superb skills of literally tossing a sandbag around house until it cried worse than randy stray cats on a campus alley. No one could touch Joe in home run contest as that was his driving passion. Tournaments? Yeah, he was pretty solid. Watch him play that falco $ guy on pokemon stadium, damn good reads. Still, he sandbagged the competitive pretty hard, focusing his energy into literally beating up a sandbag and smacking it with a warlock punch or home run bat once it was sufficiently softened.

Then we come to Isaiah. I don't really need to state the case for Isaiah, pretty sure everyone knows it and has heard it an outrageous amount of times.

It is taking these two counts into case that I came to a decision on the origin of sandbagging. And this shows where our beloved term might have come from.

TLDR; youtube link. ^

I believe the term came from boxing if I'm not mistaken.

Boxers used sandbags to practice dummy hits

Fixed fights or lack of effort is called sandbagging

The term is used in sports in general and not only the smash community...

But... but...

Frieza, how could you say such a thing? Without sandbagging, your fight with Goku wouldn't have taken 19 episodes. Sandbagging is who you are!

a couple most memorable moments in dbz were

namek's "5 minutes" taking many episodes to explode. for those of us who waited weekly for new episodes, that translated to a few months.

also trunks' transformation to ultra super saiyan vs cell, which took literally an entire episode of screaming to complete.

the first player to use the term sandbagging was a player named Recipherus, who at the time was probably the best player in the US. we're talking like early 2002.
