When should I buy a Wii U? When the game comes out or before?

I want to get a Wii U but I wonder if I should wait.
  • Will there be a Smash Bros. 4 + Wii U bundle?
  • Will there likely be any sales or price drops on the Wii U between now and the launch?
  • Or does it make sense just to buy now?

Pretty much the only place I'm going to buy from is Amazon, because I have store credit there. So maybe take that into consideration too.

Consider buying a system if it has at least 10 games you want. Don't get a system just for one game no matter how good it will be. And don't buy it early for a future title you know will exist. I learned the hard way with Brawl and Skyward Sword.

Sales come and go, but usually there are sales during the holiday season and the Wii U version is supposedly set for a Winter release.

There's probably going to be a bundle since there's already a 3DS bundle and past Wii U games like New Super Mario Bros. U, Mario Kart 8, and Wind Waker HD were bundled. Plus it's an incentive to buy a Wii U since it's a popular series. Shame Hyrule Warriors won't be getting one in the states.

If you do buy it now, then find a bundle since it'll start you off with a game so you can do more that just sit and wait.

I'm torn between buying it now, much cheaper where I live than where I'm going to live in a month, or waiting for a bundle of any kind with Smash.

If I don't cave for Hyrule Warriors, I'm gonna wait and hope for Smash 4 Wii U bundle.

Well, you might have a better luck getting a Wii U before Black Friday... or at least before SSB4 Wii U comes out.

There are Japanese playthroughs of the full game out on YouTube.
I wouldn't want to ruin my gameplay experience by watching someone else playing it first.

I guess everyone's different in that regard.

Have you ever played Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Warriors Orochi, Sengoku Basara, or those types of games? If you have, then you will have a good idea of what's going on. The main difference is a smaller cast with over-the-top gameplay similar to Sengoku Basara, but with the addition of most - I think it's about half of the cast - characters having multiple weapons. Another difference is the usage of a "weak-point" system where after a certain powerful attack, enemies will become exhausted and you can wail on them until they break out of it or until the indicator is complete and your character will do a critical hit of sorts - it'll also play a tune like in Skyward Sword when you attack enemies. This makes it less button-mashy since Warriors games and Basara games don't have that and you can spend a long time fighting an officer - high ranking units.

Expect the game to be grindy and easily boring since there's not much to games like those besides hack n' slash. Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and God of War at least has it where you can try out tons of combos and it feels like a fighting game rather than a hack-fest where you go through thousands of enemies. That doesn't mean it's fun, just don't play it every day or for long stretches like 2 to 3 hours. It's a game to sit down and relieve some stress.

I actually wouldn't judge it by game count, but by hours played relative to the system price. I'd buy a Wii U solely for Smash if it was only 150 and I could guarantee 300 hours on it. Wii U is backwards compatible so you can also catch games you would have otherwise missed. I'd say about 3 games with at least one being something you *know* you'll spend a lot of hours on.

I dunno if Wii U's getting a price drop this holiday, but you can pick up refurbished ones from Nintendo themselves at 200, which is a nice cheap option.

If you get one, buy it refurbished through Nintendo's website. I got a deluxe Wii U with Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, Nintendo Land, and 3D World for less than $300.

Different people; different values. When I bought a Wii, I only had Wii Sports until Brawl came and then I bought Super Mario Galaxy. They were my only Wii games until I bought Skyward Sword, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Metroid Prime Trilogy & Other M; The Last Story, and a couple of other games. It got boring really fast, especially with Wii Sports. All the GameCube game I had at the time were beaten and the ones I didn't, but wanted, I didn't know where to buy - Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is like $50 if you're lucky.

My rule applies to any system in the event it has little support, no backwards compatibility, long development times, etc. since it means there's still something to play even if you have a back log or you have other systems. It's a safety check.

Dang, sounds awesome. Unfortunately that's not possible for reasons mentioned in my post.

Yeah, this is kind of what I've noticed with the gameplay. It seems almost impossible to die, so there's not a sense of urgency unless going for score. At least limiting weapons and hearts (3 heart challenge and only use weapons appropriate for level sort of thing) can make the game difficult. That's how I had to do it with RE Revelation's raid mode.

The guy from GameXplain failed once on hard mode after letting the home base fall. He didn't die, but he did get a game over. I think most players are playing on easy or normal so they can get videos out fast which isn't cool in my book since some people might not know and then bash the game for being way too easy. In general though, Warriors games won't have you dying a lot if you know what you're doing and don't fight the "Lu Bu" characters early on. In Basara, it's easier to die since everything's fast-paced and enemy officers will attack much more frequently from what I've seen than in Warrriors games.

Does it even have a storyline?
Yeah, and Ganondorf's involved. No surprise there.

Before. Before. A thousand times before.

The system has a lengthy update process, and if you bought a Wii U the day Smash came out, you'd be waiting a long time to start playing it.

Or just buy it, pick it up early, have it update, go to work, school, uni, or wherever, and come back.

I was considering this same question and ultimately decided to get it before with Windwaker HD. I also plan to pick up Pikmin 3/Mario Kart 8 in the future. I figured I might as well get it now while one of the bundles I want is still available.

I went and got the Wii U early but have kept myself busy with the VC and other Wii games. I did buy the Wii U just for Sm4sh but I know eventually i'll get other games too. This game should have serious longevity!

I'm sure you're aware of this deal but I would look into the bundle that has the game, gc controller and the gc adapter for around $100.

Exactly, the last thing anyone wants to do when the game drops is install a new system and all its updates before you can even do anything else. Also I don't think any bundle involving a brand new Wii U will be such a discount that you should wait for it, but that bundle I referenced earlier in the thread is a relatively great deal:

( game = $60, gc controller = $25-40ish?, gc adapter $30ish also = $120-$130 if bought separately. The bundle is only $100 atm).
I plan to order it the second we get a confirmed release date.

Dang. I'm sort of over ganondorf and was hoping for some more Demise/Ghirahim instead. Even regular ol' Ganon could use some more stage time.

There are already some great bundles out there. It really just depends on what games you're interested in. Waiting for a Smash bundle doesn't seem worth it if you would still buy Super Mario 3D World (for example) anyway, since it will probably be at the same price.

Unless you really want like a Gamepad with a Smash symbol on it, then wait and see, I guess.

I would totally buy the Mario 3D world bundle but it's not on Amazon :(

Wondering if I should at least wait until black friday. Does Nintendo usually have sales on Black Friday?

Most things are on sale on Black Friday. I remember the Flame Red 3DS with Super Mario 3D Land going for $129.99 or something like that.

Shortages... I remember the Dragon's Crown shortages, the Wii shortages, and sales shortages 'cause people are like that and love to hoard copies to profit off of them. I could have gotten Bravely Default or A Link to the Past, damn it!

Knowing there's a digital version and that Nintendo knows how popular this series is, I don't think there will be a major shortage. Heck, my local Best Buy still has Halo 4 and I think Halo: Reach collector's editions just lying around untouched and unnoticed.

Anyone play Hyrule Warriors yet, or know if it's any good?
I will when it's released on Saturday here (roughly 3 days from now). I can let you know then, if you really want to know. I have Hyrule Warriors pre-ordered.

The Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Tropical Freeze, ZombiU, Rayman Legends and Scribblenauts Unlimited just to start. In the upcoming months there's even more **** to come. As of right now it's the best console available and I even have a PS4 which I bought in June and played like 10 times maybe.

I imagine there will be a bundle. What u could do is...

Buy a Wii U now. DO NOT BREAK THE SEAL. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT. So that way IF there's a bundle or price drop. Exchange it for the bundle. Or refund n get the sale price.

The console itself. I use it to watch twitch, and I use it as a better remote. The game library is fantastic and it will only get more killer as several AAA games slated for release within the next 6-8 months pass their release date. I literally have 150+ hours of gameplay for legitimate console selling games and smash4 and splatoon aren't even out yet.
