I assume the answer is different for the different aerials, maybe not. Do i start it at the peak of the jump right before I fast fall? or a little before or after depending on the aerial? Any and all advice would be appreciated. (I just quit brawl to play melee competitively and found out how easy Brawl is... I lurked for a while but didn't see any specific instructions, if there are some, a link to them would also be appreciated and sufficient)

You want to shffl so that the aerial comes out as late as possible, while still hitting. Normally that means at the peak of the jump right before/as you start to fall. However, if you knee as soon as you sh you can shield stab people in the head.

Also, make sure you lcancel by only slightly depressing the shield trigger. This allows you to tech after a shffl. I only recently learned this and had to retrain myself. :(

Short hop, aerial, fastfall, l-cancel. In that order. Typically, fastfalling and l-cancelling are really close together, almost at the same time. But not quite.

Do the aerial when you need to. It's never the same timing, and this is the trap most scrubs fall for. You must know the timings for each aerial, and when to use them most effectively.

A tip: Go play a lvl 1 marth (generally the easiest to combo). Get him to ~20-30%. Try to do a dair, and then when he's in the air shffl an uair. He will fly away, so run to follow him and follow-up with whatever. This just helps to learn how to shffl and apply it.
