It's not a bad idea on Nintendo's end. Obviously this isn't going to appeal to competitive players but it might open the door for more new players to get into smash ultimate, which is good for the game.

Of course a Nintendo funded tournament will have items and smash balls on they want to show Smash as intended to casuals. This is a good thing as it will bring in even more players. Not all tournaments need to be serious.

That is true. If I ever entered a tournament I would hope for no items but a Nintendo tournament will be default Smash so I would not enter that. But the Nintendo one is what it is. Should be amusing to watch at least.
