I know in between gaming you pick up some sort of reading material. So this is the topic to talk about it. Lets keep this in the rules though. My favroite book is Starship Troopers. If you have seen the moive, rember that, put it in to a ball, and flush it down the john because the book and moive are the difference between a PS2 and an Gamecude. If you like a good military fighting book I would reommend this book highly.

I also read PC Gamer magizine because it one of the top. Opinions aside it is a very good gaming magzine with good articles, great reviews, and nice personnalitys. It really bling! bling! goodness.

so now its up to you to talk about what you read.

If you have a question or comment about a book, post it. General Discussion is well general discussion. Please no book reviews. Post those in the proper topic.

My favorite story ever told is the one told in the greatest series ever created: A book series named "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to The Galaxy" It's just the best thing ever created, the best story on any format, be it movies, video games, TV-series etc. To those who don't know here's the story:
A boring British guy named Arthur Dent who loves tea and a good nights sleep, is one day rescued from the end of the Earth by his best friend, Ford Prefect, who is an alien. He then travels through time and space at incredible speeds, with, as well as his friend Ford, the two coolest characters ever to be created: Marvin the Paranoid Android and the cool, two-headed dude with three arms, Zaphod Beeblebrox. Also following in their travels is Zaphod's girl/friend/abductee/voice of concience, Trillian. An incredible book, and a must-read for everyone...

I also read: NGC (when I was in Norway, though... Here they don't have it. It's an unofficial Nintendo magazine run by crazy Englishmen), different comic books/mangas/graphic novels, the Harry potter series...

By the way, when you say all the difference between PS2 and Game Cube, which is the bad one? PS2 or Game Cube? I think both are equally good systems, but I can't afford a PS2.

I also like to read fantasy books. LoTR is great.

The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, a trilogy by Terry Brooks. I strongly suggest that ALL Fantasy fans find a way to read these, they are AMAZING books! In order, they are: Isle Witch, Antrax, Morgawr. Really awesome books, but their not kids books (no I don't mean pornos!!). So yeah, go read them!

My favorite book series is the Ender's Game series by orson scott card. A book about a child genius who is sent to space to save the Earth from an alien invasion. Another really good series is The journeys of the Chatechist by Allen Dean Foster. A book about a heardsman named Etjole Ehomba that is sent on a mysterious quest to save a visioness from an evil warlock, he meets many strange friends and even stranger enemies! I really suggest both of these series.

I really enjoy both the Hitchhiker's Guide books and the Ender's Game Trilogy. They are extremely good reads and I highly suggest that you check them out.

As far as magazines, I read Nintendo Power for my Nintendo news, and to satisfy my craving for Magic the Gathering reading material I turn to Inquest Gamer Magazine.

I haven't been reading anything except school texts recently...
And I always buy the Australian mags Hyper and Nintendo Gamer, like TM, sometimes EDGE (I can only seem to find that at the airport) and very rarely an EGM or something. We get EGM like two months too late over here it seems...

My favorite book(s) are Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, and Shadow of the Hegemon.

Ender's Shadow is a sequal to Ender's Game, and Shadow of the Hegemon is a sequal to Ender's Shadow.

They are science fiction, and I started reading because my friends liked it. Go to http://ender.com/ender for details.

(Seriously.)

Oh, and I felt this topic needed to be revived. :)

Why do you say that? :D Yeah, I do first drafts of my posts and then final draft them. (Just kidding.)

I got everyone in the school to call someone in my class Ender...

Girl - Dang, I have to go tell Andrew something!
Me - It's Ender.
Girl - (quietly) Ender?

Anyway, besides me, who else likes Holes? It's one of the good books, but doesn't beat the Ender Series.

My favorite book is The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien. In my opinion, the story is much more engrossing and more interesting than LotR, although it takes a few reads to understand it all. I don't read many magazines except Nintendo Power and the occasional National Geographic.

I read Maxim and National Geographic when I can.

I subscribe to "Play," a video game and anime magazine.

Right now I am reading a book called "Waking the Moon" by Elizabeth Hand. Good luck finding it. I found it in an old thrift store for 60 cents. I was shocked to find the story had some bi-sexual moments in it. It just caught me by surprise because I thought the book wasn't like that... not that it's a bad life style or anything. But it's a good read, though sad. I'm not sure how good the ending is because I didn't read it yet. I am going to crack up if one of you guys has also read this book.

If you have not read Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Harry Potter and Fight Club yet, I say do so soon. These are all great IMO.

It started out as a recommendation for journalism students, but I found it to be quite interesting. Currently grabbing copies from the English department, considering subscription...

As for novels, I can't really choose a favorite : /.
Currently reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. Little dramatic value (for a change), but it rouses some thought and introspection.

Hmmm... as much as I loved LotR's cinematography, the book reminded me too much of The Odyssey with the deep ravines, sun riding high and all the recurring phrases. It draws a lot from description of setting.

Ow! I got a paper cut.

Hmmm... well as a game advisor I usually read Electronics Gaming Montly, and Game Informer. So that I'll know which game is good and which ones aren't. Well aside from those two I also read Hsu and Chan (their newest comic is being sold on january!) and other comics, oh and I have read LotR. :shyguy: :beezo:

Magazine: I subscribe to Popular Science and steal my Dad's National Geographics. For gaming stuff, a website is good enough.

I have about a meter and a half of Star Wars books (many of which I should never have bought but oh well) and working up a Tom Clancy collection. Still so many books to read, so little time.

I don't really read magazines all that much, I used to gaming mag like EGM or GamePro if I saw something interesting, but with the internet it's not really necessary.

As for books, the Harry Potter books were a fun read (when is the 5th one supposed to come out?) along with the Redwall series. LotR, and to a lesser extent, The Hobbit, were amazing. I'm 130 pages into The Hunt for Red October and am loving it. I plan to read all the Clancy novels, though I doubt I will ever find the time to.

I've always wanted to read The Chronicles of Narnia, and now you guys have me interested in Jurassic Park and the Ender's Game series.

Oh, and yes, Holes was awesome.

these fields are optional but will enhance your on
I read a lot ;)

Okay, LotR is of course a standard. I love the Ender books, as well as the side story books starring Bean, which I think we'll be seeing a couple more of. For some reason, I've never read past the first book in the Hitchhiker's Guide, which I will probably fix as soon as my Stack O'Books To Read gets smaller. The His Dark Materials trilogy (which consists of The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass) is really great, some of the best books I've read in a while. Of course I've read the Harry Potter books. Quoted from Penny Arcade, the fifth book is coming out roughly at "the end of linear time," which seems pretty accurate.

Now to add something new to this conversation, rather than recycling big names everyone recognizes. Terry Pratchett is another one of those British guys who writes funny stuff, like Douglas Adams only with fantasy books. Most of his stuff takes place on Discworld, a flat planet resting on the backs of four giant elephants, which are in turn standing on the back of A'tuin, a giant turtle who carries them through space. This guy can be very subtle, you may have to read through a second time if you want to catch everything. And he just keeps cranking this stuff out. The first Discworld book is "The Color of Magic" if anyone is interested.

Its hard for me to go a find a good book to read that does not have a big name or auther such as Tom Clancy. I dont read much of his books but I do like Clusser, who writes the seires based on the character Dirk Pitt. Think Tom Clancy adventure with scuba gear, though Clusser plots tend to be a little on the outrageous side. I also enjoy books by Robert A. Henien. Word of caution, his books often deal with plots and stories that deal with conterverisal thing, such as politcal issues. Nothing bad but some of his topics might upset people. Starship Troopers is a must read of his collection. Right now I'm reading Farnhams Freehold right. I can barley put it down. If any one has a good seires that they really like please post about it.

I have to decide to add a general discuss of a book to the question at hand becasue I do not see a topic in which to talk about books not review them. Thank you

Heh I've just gotten into His Dark Materials!

I got the first book(the golden compass) for xmas. I read it way to fast because it was soo good, and I just wanted more of it, so the next day I went down to my local bookshop and bought the Subtle Knife. I'll read the last 50 pages tonight actually:bee:

Then I need to buy the amber spyglass, but I don't have the money for it at the moment.

And did you know that New Line, who did Lord of the rings, has bought the rights for His Dark Materials, and rumors say there will be two movies.

Oh and then there's a fourth book coming out. The Book of Dust, a book like simerilion(sp) that explains certain parts/objects/characters of the series.

The books just suck you in!

The only mag i read ATM is Nintedo gamer. I used to read hyper, but I have been to poor even to afford that recently...
I have always liked the look of edge, but I havent ever bought one....

My favorite book is 'The Godfather' be Mario Puzo. I just loved the way the mafia solved all their problems, and I dont mean be killing ppl. The main Don of the book was just really smart, and solved all his (and others) problems so carefully.
I recently read another one of Mario Puzo's books 'omerta' but I didnt think it was as good because it lacked most of what I liked about his first book. It was still a good book, it was just a little easier to put down.

A couple years after I saw Fight Club I was looking to buy the dvd when I saw that it was a book. (The movie stayed pretty close to the book, but has a different ending.) Since that book was so good I checked to see if Chuck Palahniuk, the author wrote any other books. It turns out he did. So far the only other book I read of his was Survivor.

The movie was Rated R and most of his books are similar in content, so if you read them expect mature content.

The DarK Tower Collection by Stephen King

I love these books, great story, crazy plot twist, *****ing guinfights and if you want moral value the characters have excellent symbolism(sp?). Its a story about a gunslinger in a lost world trying to get to the dark tower. On his way he makes certain decisions and picks up allies. Its a great book series total of 7 books. I have only read thee second one but I have a friend whos reading the 4th one and I'll take it as soon as hes done.

Lol. You have good taste, my friend. Wait 'til you get to the seventh book---you'll be screaming "WTF" at the top of your lungs. The ending will blow you away.

It easily goes to say that I am an avid reader. If something piques my interest, I'll pick it up and read it---this goes from things as mundane as cereal boxes to gigantic omnibuses that span multiple books. I am a huge fantasy/science fiction fan, although I enjoy many other books that span across other genres (especially well-written mysteries). I do read comic books from time-to-time, but I refuse to touch anything from Marvel that is current (DC I will not touch at all and have never got into, save for a couple of good books like the Manhunter or Sandman series). I lost all faith in Marvel after the Onslaught story arc, when they "killed" the bulk of their superheroes and then "resurrected" them. I also enjoy reading manga, as contrived and as cliche as it can be at times (Naruto and Bleach are the two primary examples that come to mind). I've read a couple of graphic novels (Sin City by Frank Miller is one of the best ones out there; I really wanna read 300 next).

Books that I highly recommend to you all:

"The Dark Tower" series by Stephen King:

I'm sure you've heard of this man; everybody has! While I'm not a huge fan of his other works, I hold the Dark Tower series in high esteem. It is a masterwork, with awesome characters and a plot that just sucks you in. I couldn't put any of these books down when I started on them. Out of the seven books in the series, my favorite has to be the fourth book in the series: Wizard and Glass. It isn't to say that the other books weren't good (I will admit the first two books could were very tedious), but this one talked about Roland's origin and the world he came from.

"The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" by Stephen R. Donaldson:

ZOMG! YOU MUST READ THESE BOOKS. I cannot stress their excellence in words; they are simply phenomenal. This is epic fantasy at its finest. Nothing can touch these books. They have everything that you could possibly want in it: Action, drama, despair, and a leper (no kidding!).

"Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: First Strike, and Halo: The Ghosts of Onyx" by Eric Nylund:

Being the gamer geek that I can be sometimes, I generally like to check out some of the books that are based off of major gaming franchises. Most of the time, I walk away from these books really cheated and disappointed. However, this motley assortment of books did not fail in appeasing me. These are all solid reads, especially Ghosts of Onyx. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT pick up "The Flood" by William C. Dietz (which is the second book in the core Halo trilogy). It was horrible and very, very boring. Plus, the author of that particular book didn't catch the feel that was behind Halo very well, either. It felt very cut-and-paste straight from the game, whereas the other books captured that whole "militaristic feel" and inhumanity behind the Spartans well.

"Knight of the Word" series by Terry Brooks:

Brought to you in part by the guy who wrote the "Magic Kingdom for Sale" series and the "Shannara" series. Extremely good.

"The Eternal Guardian" series by Ronald Anthony Cross:

One of my all-time favorite book series; it ranks up there with the Dark Tower series and the Thomas Covenant series. Though the books are extremely hard to come by nowadays, but if you can at least find them at your local library then please check them out. It is a very interesting and philosophically-minded adventure through time and space with some colorful individuals assigned to protect the world with the Guardian pendants. It is also chalk-filled with gut-busting and thought-provoking humor.

If you guys wanna talk about books or want some recommendations, throw a PM my way and we can chat. Lol. I got a million of 'em.
