Someone please explain. All I did is hold L and c-stick up to repeatedly jump. Saw something flashing and paused on it.

Is it like the first frame of my shield trying to appear? i tried hitting L + start to pause as my shield was forming and i can't get it to look the same like this (maybe due to not getting fully hard shield on first frame), though i do see your shield starts small and grows.

So I tried Gamecube too:

Yes, this is frame 1 of your shielding animation. You see, holding the C-stick upward can only trigger a jump when you are shielding. So at the first actionable frame after landing, the C-stick input doesn’t cause anything since you aren’t in the shielding animation yet, so only your L/R input triggers something in-game. At the next frame, you are in the shielding animation, so the C-stick input takes effect now.
