Sakurai said that when making a new Smash it had to be about more than just adding new characters. It had to have a new idea or something to make the game worth existing. We know that the different versions will connect and there's potential customization but in what way?

Post your speculation here.

I don't even know, not without some form of seeing the first trailer.

But if I had to hazard a guess, it would be focusing on different modes, like tag team, customization (e.g Mario w/Doc's moveset). I can also imagine 3DS version would get the subspace equivalent, while Wii U's single player would be more like a storyline driven Event Mode.

I imagine it'd be the other way around as portable games are meant to be played in short bursts.

I can see the trailer

"The Newest Challanger... *Mii falls from the sky and lands face first* ...is you!"

GuyBrush how do ya keep pumping out new threads like crazy?
I'm gonna assume the only difference (if any) would be that the Wii U version will include the option to save and share replays and stages.
I know nothing of the 3DS power, memory capabilities, online functionality or online features that devs have access to, like miiverse integration and such which the Wii U still hasn't completed yet.

Gotta channel my hype into something don't I?

I hope they don't make the WiiU graphics sub-par just to keep it similar to the 3DS version.

I'm actually totally fine with it just being about character/stage/item/Pokeball/event updates. I'm not a competitive player, and I was pretty comfortable with the game style.

Though I would like a more comprehensive level editor, perhaps one where you can modify existing stages and save a copy. More parts available via download would be good too.

Maybe a kind of objective-based multiplayer mode, like in Red Hot Rumble. The modifiers available in Brawl didn't really do much for me; I hardly ever bothered with them.

As for what I THINK the big difference will be, I think it will be about customisation and levelling up. I mean, Sakurai's already said as much, so unless they've got something bigger up their sleeve...

If there's leveling up, it has to be player's ranking. Characters can't level up because it will cause imbalance. Characters can't become harder, better, faster, and stronger.

Actually Sakurai already said there would be character leveling as an example of the customization of the single player focus the DS will have. He also said these characters would be portable to the Wii U in some way. I cannot assure any of this as Sakurai himself was very vague and it was stated long ago when the game was just startinng development.

In the worst case sceneario, modified characters would probably be a new "mode" sort of like Timed Matches or "Metal Giant Bunny Hood" Matches and would probably not be played in the competitive scene

Edit: PS: and quite honestly it does sound very fun pitting my level 17 Sonic vs my friends level 25 Bowser xD.

that can't happen, quite literally. when games are remade onto the console, it'll be at least upscaled to fit the resolution. same art style though is something.

Y'know, I think I remember the interview where he hinted at all that; it was posted some time after the original announcement in 2011. Man, that did sound really cool. Although, as Budokai 3 taught me, leveled up characters can be imbalanced as ****!

For Me, The Biggest Change Would Be The Character Balancing. Why? Because YES!!! I Won't Feel Like A Noob Playing As Kirby!

Yea, character level imbalances things a lot. But with all customization there is always a standard level 0 template, so even if customization was forced upon the DS version, competitive players would just "restart" all of their favorite characters and just play at level 0 at all times is my guess.

And if it isn't forced and it is just another "special mode" like "Lightning Melee" that does not in any way affect my characters in the regular VS mode then by all means I welcome it with open hands. After all, leveling a character makes you feel connected to it and it does sound very fun going toe to toe with your opponents own leveled character, sort of like Pokemon. And as we all know level 100 Mewtwo has the best stats :150:

Yeah I meant only for the single player modes. Sort of like the sticker business in SSE, but worthwhile.

I believe Sakurai said something a while back about having an experience that is more "individual" and "customizable". Just hope that doesn't mean having everyone play as their Miis or generic anime characters as the big new feature. Seriously, that has the potential to undermine the entire roster!

So now that a year has passed the big differences are new ledge mechanics, (supposedly) increased landing lag on aerials and moveset customization. Anyone got anything else to add?

I also heard somewhere that air dodging is more punishable and rolling is less so.

Custom moves is the only thing that I would call a "big difference" personally. Everything else is minor enough compared to changes between brawl and melee and nothing radically new or interesting has been added to the base mechanics.

Ummm the fact that we have Amiibo figures, cross platform communication, portable play...It's more than just about mechanics.

ledges custom moves that is about it the rest is brawl.
Yeah. I loved the equipment and Smash run and the new trophy mode and Amiibos and lack of tripping and brighter colors and faster-but-not-melee-fast speed in Brawl too. :troll: :troll: :troll:

There are more differences than people are willing to admit.

I was mostly joking with my response, don't burn me at the stake.

The biggest difference is that it's Smash Bros. 64 4.0.

On top of what has been said I feel like another difference is that they're really going to town with the assist trophies and stages. Already we have so many new exciting assist trophies and games like Paper Mario are finally getting a chance to shine.

I think the assist trophy idea is really coming into it's own this time around.

It feels likes it's overflowing with even more fan service and fanfare than ever before.

lack of tripping he put it in that isn't really anything. Amiibos most people aren't gonna use. Smash run is one game console only.

Skylanders being a two billion dollar franchise says hi.

Smash run is one game console only.
Sakurai considers the two games to be exactly that - two different games, and not two different versions. So this hardly dismisses anything. And Smash Run still wasn't in any previous Smash game.

More characters, at-long-last revised edgehogging mechanics, some cool visual effects, the ability to play most stages in a tryhard-legal form, new funsies content, Robin, Megaman, portability, and Smash Run are the main things I'm noting that seem significantly different and interesting.

that was a HUGE bump

I'm not going to like the ledge mechanics, if you can just hop onto them and knock the other person off.

He didn't say "buy".
