What Smash 4's single player mode should have been.

Smash Wii U's single player is fine. People just whine too much around here to be perfectly honest.

Smash 64 and Melee's classic modes tried to incorporate matches related to each of the major fighters, i.e., fighting a Kirby team, or a giant DK, or against the Mario Bros in a 2 v 1, things like that. It was a great setup, but it doesn't work as well with this roster. The mode would have to be much longer to stay true to the earlier versions, and it would have been horrible to have to play through a long Classic mode 50+ times. Same thing goes for Melee's adventure mode. The shortened 7 round version in Smash Wii U works just fine, and it's not that bad on 9.0. I've beaten Classic on 9.0 with about 20 different characters.

The All-Star mode is fine. It's going to be kinda long and drawn out no matter how it's set up, due to the roster size, and randomizing the fights wouldn't have helped that much. Trying something different this time was fine. Besides, who plays All-Star mode after completing all of the associated challenges? It's probably the least enjoyable mode.

Trophy Rush is by far the best trophy-centric mini-game they have included in the series. By FAR. Brawl's version was completely arbitrary and unrelated to anything else and Melee's was just a gumball machine. Trophy Rush actually uses the Smash engine and lets you apply the same skills that you use in all of the normal modes.

Event Mode is the best incarnation so far.

Master/Crazy Orders is a fun unique mode which adds some real variety to the matches, similar to what you can do in Special Smash, which (for me anyway) is a horribly underused mode. I like that they made some of those elements available in other modes.

Smash Tour is not perfect, but it's entertaining enough. It's not my favorite thing ever, but I don't understand all the hatred about it. With 4 human players nobody has to deal with the cheating AI.

Target Blast is ok, not as good as having unique Break The Target stages for each character, but again, that's a consequence of the enormous roster. I don't fault them for designing 3 stages instead of 50. That wasn't a mode I ever really played more than a few times anyway.

My only regret is that Smash Run is a 3DS exclusive. I love that game. I can play it for hours. But it would be so much better to play with other people! Playing local multiplayer on a 3DS in the USA is a fairly rare occurrence... I might be able to pull that off once or twice a year :(

The reason for why Smash Run is 3DS-exclusive is simply due to the fact that the map is very massive, and trying to keep track of everyone on one map would be impossible without splitting up the screen.

more than 4 3ds screens can definitely fit on a TV

I think split-screen would have been more than possible.

Also if it was online, that would eliminate the need for that =P

I feel a mix of Melee's adventure mode, with Brawl's boss battles, and cutscenes, would be great for that sorta thing.
Actually, the idea I have for this mode, is literally just Subspace Emissary with actual Nintendo levels and what not. And a Super Mario 3D World-esque world map, and implementing Smash Run elements, and bundling in Event Mode with it.

Wouldn't even need a big story to it to be fun either.

I completely agree with the OP. Imagine if the 3DS version had never been made. Then we wouldn't have the frustrating Smash Tour and had Smash Run instead, which is far more enjoyable. I liked Subspace Emissary in Brawl too. It wasn't Melee's Adventure Mode but at least that was interesting. Instead we get Smash Tour which is no way fun at all. I actually think that Smash for Wii U should have Smash Run as DLC available. As for the Master/Crazy I actually don't mind them, but still feel like they shouldn't be arbitrary. My last gripe with this game is that there weren't enough unlockable characters. For having such a huge roster you'd think there'd be more, but I guess Sakurai thought everybody would like having the majority of the characters from the start.

Or we would have never gotten smash run, and ONLY had smash tour.

Also that's the exact mentality. Unlocking characters was easier now. Kinda disappointing, but at the same time, it has its benefits, cuz people could hop into battle with their favorite characters without having to leave their gamecube on overnight.

Could have been Wii, but U playin'....
If only something like this were possible, but it would definitely require a large amount of memory to develop.

I guess the way it could work is that you go to each franchise to deal with the different challenges that they offer. And once every franchise has been covered, you'd then have to confront Master Hand and Crazy Hand, who would later transform into Master Core.

You basically begin as your customized Mii, and as you defeat fighters, they'll be added to your party. You can then switch your fighters at any rest areas that you find. You can have up to 6 fighters in your party.

Smash 5 should really take a back to basics approach with its single player modes and its stages, i hope the next games developers understands no on likes smash tour, or when you have to fight the stage on wily's castle and pyrosphere.

This is actually very close to what I was envisioning, yeah.

Also just so I'm clear - you guys realise Smash Tour is multiplayer oriented, right?

For single player mode I agree. Especially All Star. I hated in Brawl fighting my way to the mario level and then drawing Luigis mansion... with all those freaking pillars making KOs hard. Worse was Pokemon's Spear Pillar. Object of each match is to avoid damage... but the main factor for this happening or not was did I draw a stage I fight on, or a stage I fight against? For single player modes... give us the option to choose who's home stage we fight on.

With that said... For multi player fun this game thrives on insanity and chaos. Having the option to tr and pull a freaking powerful dragon to your side... is an extra element of fun.

Competitive play tries to eliminate this kind of thing which makes sense for what it does. But for the non competitive times those levels are good to have as options in multiplayer... and only multiplayer.
