Yeah, much like the user above me said, a JV is when you win an entire match without ever taking a single percentage. (Which would include offscreen damage, so it's not necessarily "not getting hit). The number indicates how many stocks there were +1, so a JV3 is when you win a 2 stock match without taking damage, a JV5 is winning a 4 stock match unscathed.
Is it stupid? Yes. We should just call them "Perfect games" like any normal person would, but we don't.
The term JV came from a Melee player with the tag "JV3X3." And a JV doesn't nessicarly mean a perfect game. If your playing with 4 stocks and win with 0% and 2 stocks remaining it would still be a JV3. JV2 if you had 1 stock left ect...That JV talk makes me wonder where did the term ''JV(number of stocks +1)'' come from.
Who had the idea of calling a perfect match a ''JV5'' or ''JV3''?
Who thought of calling it a ''JV'' in the first place instead of saying ''Perfect match''?
