What is the purpose of widescreen hack?

Why does 20XXTE and the 20XX hack pack have a widescreen option? Does it serve a purpose of is it just for looks?

So that you can have a 16:9 aspect ratio instead of a 4:3 aspect on a widesceen display if you have one. This could be on a crt, lcd, plasma, or oled just so long as the display supports widecreen signal.
