I've seen numerous people say things like this, that people do or don't "play Smash correctly" but they never elaborate on what exactly that means. So what IS the "correct way" to play Smash?

If you ask me, there is no "correct" way to play. If you play the game and have fun, that's really all that matters.

If you want a more competitive interpretation of the game, you might have to sacrifice features you consider fun (equipment, for example). But nobody's forcing you to play a certain way in your own house among your friends.

I'm aware of how competitive play works, however, i've seen people say that in For Glory mode, where competitive rules are used, some people don't play the correct way, and i'm not quite sure what that means. Are they referring to people who camp/ play defensive? Because playing defensive is just as "correct" as playing offensive.

You can pretty much ignore whatever someone says about playstyles. If the game allows it, it's correct.

Those are usually just complaints from a sore loss. If the way someone is playing is truly incorrect, it will be patched out.

Basically there is no "right" way to play in terms of playstyle. Your playstyle is up to you to refine and change whenever you want. It's one of the funner parts of Smash, because you can have a solid playstyle, but not have mastered it yet. That's where learning comes in.

I think what a lot of people (myself included) find fun about Smash are the mind games and reads and technical play.

Then you have players who take a character like Samus and never use the A button, they roll around at random firing missiles and charging up their beam and just shooting it off with no set up. What's most annoying about this is that to me it tarnishes the game I love, they probably don't even realise how deep and satisfying Smash can be because they've found this cheesy play style that can beat other bad players. They are also really boring to play against since the only thing you need to do to beat them is be disciplined and boring in return to punish the constant rolling.

But you have to remember. Not everyone that plays Smash Bros enjoys competitive play and its "hidden moral rules." Even if going to FG and to do legal tactics that are "disrespectful," it can still be fun for them no matter how much you hate it. A better idea is go to With Friends mode and battle with good/better people on this website, which shares your mentally of fair play of competitive Smash.

Did you win?

Then you played correctly

Did you lose?

Then you played correctly.

No wrong way to play!

As people have said, there is no wrong way to play, but from a john's point of view, the incorrect way to play Smash is patiently, forcing approaches, looking for mistakes that can be punished and abusing high-tier character traits, they consider playing offensively using low-tier characters to be the only way to play.

There's no one "correct" way to play. People like us can set up organized rules and go into depth on competitive play. More casual types can go nuts with items and stages and special rules. Both of them are viable, as are any other ways there are.

That's the beauty of Smash, especially Smash 4. At its finest, it's a wild party game and a viable competitive game. It's the kind of thing anyone can enjoy, which fits right into Nintendo wanting to appeal to all ages and walks of life.
