What if Back Smash?

What if we had a 4th option for smash attacks like Back Aerial but instead a grounded version of Back Smash?
Inputs would be a Forward Smash in the opposite direction you're facing.
Would that drastically change how the game is played?
How would your character perform the Back Smash?
Do you think its an unnecessary/bad idea?
Tell me what you think about my weird idea.

I've sometimes wondered about this too, if it would be possible/a good idea.

A Back Smash could be a cool addition. If the input is as accessible as you describe it (especially if you're using a C-stick), then these could work and add a bit more depth to gameplay. It'd probably rile up competitive players (maybe in a good way, maybe not) as it'd be really different, but if it didn't make the game any less competitive (I'm going to suppose it wouldn't), then it'd likely be embraced by the community. But it could change the metagame a fair bit, who knows.

If Sakurai and his team decided to include Back Smashes into the game, I don't think they'd have trouble coming up with things. Some could be simple reverses of the Forward Smash at the last moment to trick opponents, kind of like the Falcon Punch. Others could be more legitimate in uniqueness, although I can't think of anything that creative off the top of my head. The only thing I can think of now is Charizard using his tail or something.

Basically, my thoughts are:
- It's probably easily possible to implement, with the right mechanics
- It'd probably take time for some people to get used to it
- Competitive players will probably like it if it doesn't diminish the competitive nature of the game, which is probably debatable
- Nothing would be holding Sakurai's team back from coming up with ideas for Back Smashes

We're probably never going to see this idea happen in an official Smash game, but I think the idea has an interesting appeal to it.
...Although I think the Down Smash has played this role effectively enough that we don't need a Back Smash very badly.

Forward Smashes tend to be KO moves, so as long as Back Smashes keep the KO power, most people won't complain.

I think it's an interesting idea, but at the same I feel it actually would make the overall experience more clunky since using a smash in the opposite direction is already instant anyway and there would be no advantage to just standing facing the opposite direction of your opponent after you land your attack. Also i t would rely on the C-Stick since doing that input with the analog stick and A button would affect how you turn and everything.

And what about back dashes? Back ledge attacks? Aerial smashes? Aerial grabs? Aerial taunts? Air dashes? Four taunts? Crouching smashes? Ledge grabs? Ledge taunts? Smash throws? Aerial Specials? Aerial shields? Aerial trips? Combo breakers?

After a while, it just gets to be too much. I can see maybe smash aerials being a thing in the future but the formula has worked since SSB64 and SSBM. If too much stuff is added, it loses its simplicity which is a huge thing for Smash.

:4shulk:: BACK SMA- aww someone stole my joke. :(

In all honesty though, I kinda see it as a bit unnecessary. As others have said, FSmashes are normally kill moves, but at the same time, people would get mad if it wasn't a kill move with the same power, seeing as they may have had more power if it was still just an FSmash. In that case, I question why it'd be necessary.

Guess I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," thought pattern. :p

In one sense, it'd be pretty cool to do. Having an extra move could change things, but then again, it could be completely useless. You'd also pretty much need to use the C Stick, yeah it could be possible with just the analogue stick, but you'd probably mess up the inputs with a tilt or forward smash if you got the timing wrong. Then you'd also have to incorporate BTilts...

I dunno, there's two sides to every coin. But given how Smash plays, they'd have to really think things through if they were to put Back moves in the game, or it'd cause so many misplaced moves to occur.

I'm mostly against it. I could see how it could work as like a slower F smash with more kill power. Similar to like a sped up turn around warlock punch or something. And that is a pretty interesting thought. But, being able to instantly F smash without having to turn around first is probably more valuable than having another directional smash attack.

And what about back dashes? Back ledge attacks? Aerial smashes? Aerial grabs? Aerial taunts? Air dashes? Four taunts? Crouching smashes? Ledge grabs? Ledge taunts? Smash throws? Aerial Specials? Aerial shields? Aerial trips? Combo breakers?

Lol, ledge taunts.

Ha, interesting thought. How I imagine this is that back smash attacks are weaker than forward smashes, thus making opponents more vulnerable on their backsides. This is based off of how people are more vulnerable on their backsides in real life. The game's mechanics would obviously need to be reworked so that players could not just simply turn around and forward smash right away. Anyways, this could lead to some interesting competitive situations where players have a new sort of positional advantage they can be in.

While most characters would have back smashes weaker than their f-smashes, there could be some exceptions such as Bowser with his spikes and Charizard with his tail.
