What does Sakurai mean about bringing Friends to a Brawl?

I was reading through the third addition to the interview with Iwata, searching for answers and just getting more questions.

It's clear you can go to the settings With Friends or With Anyone in Versus mode. He couldn't say that more clearly, that was evident before, etc.

But later he states that "Also, when participating in a Brawl, you can form teams not just with your Friends but with Anyone, which has both elements of Versus and Co-op." Does this mean that we're able to bring someone from our Friends list into the Versus mode, and play against just anyone? Or are "With Friends" and "With Anyone" so completely separate, that we're unable to do anything but random match-ups in the team battles online?

Perhaps someone knows more than I do.

To me it seems like you would be placed with a random teammate and that doesn't sound very fun, but I hope you can have your friend that is with you play teams on with anyone

While it would be nice to choose, its only fair this way. After reading what they said about ranks, ect, I actually agree.

It would be a competition to the top otherwise.

At first I was peeved at the thought of no ranks/records...but, like in Halo 3, if it had stats (for "with everyone" mode) then It would really take the fun out the game.

I cant tell you how many times I play halo and my friend is so obsessed with his rank he throws a hissy fit every time we start to lose. Of course most the time its by his own undoing. And of course its gets awkward and lame when that happens......So with smash being laid back, I can really see myself having more fun.

Back to the teammate thing Id rather have it this way than none at all. I cant wait to play this game.

Might be fun. Especially if you don't get a n00b playing with you, since he'll probably be killed over and over, and he'll gain points for the other team, or he'll be dead in stock mode. Then he'll steal your lives.

Yeah...pray you won't get n00bs. Looks fun otherwise.

Man, I really hope life-stealing will be disabled on team battles online. Then you'll just get a bunch of whores killing themselves just to steal your lives. And that's lame.

I would assume that stealing lives would be banned because sakurai and crew know what people are going to do if they are n00b. I also think that team attack would be off w/o being able to change it to stop abuses. It would be difficult for somebody who has never played with team attack on, and he might kill you by accident, which is why, imo, there wont be a vote type system, which is an alternative to not having one.

Hmm...I'm really torn on the team-attack thing.

On the one hand, I want it on for obvious reasons.

On the other hand, it might be nice to have it off because some partners might be idiots who like to tk.

In any case, I hope it's selectable. It's a REALLY big issue for me.
