Don't give up. Your persistence will pay off sometime down the road.

I actually have the same problem; I can usually best most of the people in my area, but I tend to have a problem consistently beating one of my friend's Fox. He knows no ATs other than maybe jumping out of shine, yet I still have a hard time. This is because a simple grab leads to chain grabs and upsmash *****. And then shines knock me down, which leads to a bunch of tech chases. Then if I'm off-stage, shinespikes pretty much mean a guaranteed lost stock. Btw, I'm a Fox main.

It's kind of an awkward feeling, but you just figure out what you're doing wrong and what he's doing right (which then, you play around that). I noticed that:

1. I like to shield; he likes to grab. See the problem? Grabs counter shield, so I just have to remember to sidestep dodge against him. This kinda goes towards that one point another poster brought up: forgetting basics. I hardly ever sidestep anymore, since I usually find shielding better...and it usually works out better more often than not, but in this case, I just need to adapt and remember little stuff like that.

2. I like to play by the edge. He likes to spam shine a lot, so he'll usually catch me when I'm offstage, leading to a gimp. Remedy is to just stay on the damn stage and play in the center.

Basically, a little adjustments to my gameplay is enough to tilt the game in my favor (and I need to learn the Fox ditto match-up better. lol). When I remember these small details, it's a landslide victory.

Tl;dr: Don't give up, and just really take a moment and ask yourself what exactly went wrong.
