"He wouldn't elaborate on exactly what those customizations are, saying only that they won't be costumes and they won't be something that players have to unlock through repetitive tasks. Different costumes, he said, would take away from what makes each character unique. He also wanted to avoid boring, repetitive tasks, while Sora works to produce a "stress free, easy connectivity" between the two versions."

This is from an interview to Sakurai.

So, since it isn't Costumes and since it applies to every character (and not just Villarger or Miis, so it isn't changing your face) what do you guys think customization actually means?

The Dream: Each character has alternate moves that can be swapped (Link B could be various types of arrows for example, Samus charge beam could be various flavors of fire/electricity/whatever else the Prime series had)

The Reality (most likely): Whether or not you jump when you tap up, ect.

I assume what he means by costumes is "stuff you can unlock in game that isn't character specific that you'll be able to add to the characters" meaning it's probably still possible character-specific costumes exist, like Dr. Mario for Mario. But I'm probably wrong.

Those are control customization. He's talking about customizing a character through the DS version and porting it to the Wii U version so you can play with your customized character, but he didn't explain what customization actually is. I am not really worried about it in any way as if it is something as game breaking as customizing stats or abilities then there will just be a "standard" stat and skill set for each character for competitive play and for casual play changing it up every once in a while will be very entertaining. Hope it is all balanced though.

He means that the next third party charecter is the germ from Spore and you customize the charecter as the match goes on.

I know...but I can still dream damn it! Alternate movesets would be awesome... :I

Winning custom stage parts when completing a unique achievement?
MAKE YOUR OWN TARGET TEST STAGE?
Scheduling and reminders of tournaments?
Menu customization?
Roster Editor, moving character slots to your preference?
Unlockable ATs when you complete certain achievements?
Full games or maybe additional DLC for other Wii U to win when you work hard on training with you certain character?
So many possibilities.

Guys, he is talking specifically about customizing a character on the 3DS version and porting it to the Wii U version, it isn't stage, controls or modes. It has something to do with changing characters and apparently it isn't costumes.

"The games will have cross interaction. Specifically, players will be able to take characters they've customized and transfer them to the Wii U version."

Hope to Sakurai I'm wrong, but I think the man's talking about a custom character creator. Think about it: how many casuals would totally go nuts over this? Take your Mii, give 'em some custom weight, speed, and B specials, and voila! The crown jewel of the casual experience and the bane of existence for tier list organizers!

Does it have to be the bane of existence for tier list organizers? Couldn't they just exclude custom characters all together? I personally can't see the harm in this unless it somehow limits regular play. Though I would rather Miis not exist in Smash I could easily see this being the case.

Maybe a variety of weapons for each character that you can put on and use. (Custom movesets with the moves you like)

Maybe have alternate costumes unlocked by having Save Data from other games.

Just a random example

Have Kid Icarus: Uprising data on your 3DS unlocks Dark Pit

This would not only increase profits for other Nintendo games but also allow the customization

I can't really see custom moves happening since that leaves those who own only the WiiU at a disadvantage, as they don't get to customize while somebody who buys both versions does, and that confers a direct gameplay advantage.

Maybe cosmetic effects? For example, you can choose whether Peach Bomber explodes in a blossom of hearts or a fireball? That would be the best compromise for me. Preserves gameplay balance while allowing individuals to leave their own unique mark on a character.

Sadly, Sakurai's statement seems to more or less confirm that costumes will not be in. "Different costumes will take away from what makes each character unique" is pretty unequivocal. It's also a really lame excuse coming from a guy as imaginative as Sakurai! But hey.

Hopefully no costumes just means there's no custom costumes. And wouldn't more costumes actually make a character more unique?

This is what I don't get, either. More costumes for different characters would definitely make them more unique. I'm hoping it has nothing to do with raised stats that make characters in the game stronger, because that alone would change up the tier list like nothing.

I really want some costumes, I guess it's even better if I don't have to do repetitive tasks to get them. Guess it's goodbye to any chance of funny generic hats that can be placed on any character too. But can we PLEASE get a customizeable color palette?!? C'mon!

Customization = More yoga poses for Wii Fit Trainer to beat your face in with.

But in all seriousness, I have no idea. It's too vague.

My hopes are seemingly dashed for costumes, but if he isn't including Wario style costumes in his statement then there is still hope.

This really is hard to figure out. We know he doesn't like the idea of leveling up stats, he doesn't want custom costumes all over the place and interchangeable attacks would cause all kinds of unnecessary drama.

So the only things that come to mind are:

1 - Custom entrances
2 - Custom victory themes
3 - Custom taunts
4 - Custom projectiles (looks different but function exactly the same)
5 - Custom visual effects when characters attack
6 - Custom emblems people can draw and stick on their character

Also I am pretty relieved we won't have to worry about cross platform play.

Probably just small cosmetic changes but nothing big like costumes. It would be nice if Sakurai changed his mind on the alternate costume issue though.

I do like to think that he meant that changing costumes (adding funny hats, customized outfits) would take away from the character. Certainly, showing off their appearances from throughout their history would not take away from who these characters are.

I think character customization could mean:
Miis. Could be just appearance, moveset, stats.
Villager shirt customization.

I really don't think it means alternate specials, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like that.
I also don't think it means adding RPG elements... I wouldn't really put that under character "customization" anyway.

It's highly unlikely that he is referring to Miis with his remarks about character customization. Sakurai's intent seems to be for players to take their characters, customize them in some way on 3DS, and bring them to WiiU. Mii as the only customizable character out of a roster of roughly 45 or 50 reps would not adequately achieve this goal.

Mii could certainly be customizable, but it wouldn't be the only customizable character.

Right, which is why I'm saying that whatever he has in mind wouldn't solely appear in the form of the Mii and nothing else.

It's also unlikely for Mii to get preferential treatment when it comes to additional move options and things like that. I don't see Sakurai favoring any single character over the others that heavily.

I'm in the camp of this being cosmetic effects for attacks, taunts, things like that. Easy to do, fun, and no effect on gameplay.

I just hope it's nothing that "boosts stats" that would honestly really turn me off from the game but costumes wouldn't be bad, i'd want very light custom stuff, knowing sakurai the custom stuff they added is more characters to the nickname option you have SIX NOW!

I'd just end up keeping the game. But if it acted anything like Soul Calibur, then I wouldn't enjoy it as much. While the costumes in that game were somewhat cool, I didn't like the raising of stats. I think the same thing happened in Tekken 6.
