I had to do this because I always wonder what controller people use to play SSB4. I usually play with the Wii U GamePad. Vote if you want!

I usually play with the Wii U Gamepad. I don't have the luxury of using the only TV to play much anymore and GameCube controller is suspended. Still, there is satisfaction in winning matches with the Gamepad.

I used to use the gamepad exclusively. I eventually got into Melee and PM so I started using the GC controller. Now I'm at uni and don't even have my own set up so I pretty much need the GC controller. Both are equally good in my opinion. I guess now that I'm more used to the GC controller it's better for me but I have absolutely no problem using other controllers so long as I can set up my control scheme.

Thanks guys for your votes and comments! I'm surprised so many people voted for the GC controller, since like Ikenna said they're suspended. I wish I could've gotten one of those but it seemed like they cancelled them so quickly.

You should know that there has to be threads like this already existed, but I won't mind.

Here are some advice I would like to give you, there's also a HORI battle pad which is a GC that you can just connect it to the Wii remote similar to the classic controller. And if this poll is specifically for the Smash Wii U, 3DS can be included , but for Smash 3DS only users like me, 3DS controller is their only choice . The SSB4 special GC controller is original GC controller.

I will never get used to Wii U gamepad because I hate to have my hands play Smash in a distance, and the Wii U's control stick isn't good as the GC control stick imo.

And what do you mean "other"? There's just HORI battle pad needed to add and that's it.

I tend to use the GameCube controller and the Pro Controller to a lesser extent nowadays, but for several months beforehand I used the GamePad. Haven't been able to go back to using that thing after being used to a GCN controller for quite a while now.

I use the classic controller. I have a gamecube controller but I don't have the adapter.

It's always really weird to me to see people using anything other than a GameCube controller.

I use a GCN controller, but one that actually came with a GameCube, not a Smash-branded one.
The Classic Controller's good, too, and I usually use it over the GCN pads, but not for Smash.

As a given, I use the 3DS for Smash 3DS. #obvious

GamePad. Oddly, I can't play anymore with a GC controller.

I use a regular old GC Controller, so I clicked Other. It's not even the special Sm4sh one, just a plain white GC controller.

I use the Wii Classic Controller Pro, as that's what I was using for awhile for Mario Kart Wii and 8. I'm annoyed that I can't use it at tournaments, so occasionally I use a Gamecube controller.

Wow, now I'm really surprised so many people chose the GC controller. I assumed people used the Wii U GamePad or Wii U Pro Controller but I was wrong. Now I'm wondering if I'm missing out with this special SSB4 GC controller or even the original. But I guess I need some kind of adapter or something to do that. Thanks again everyone for taking the time to vote and even reply! :b:

No matter how much I try alternatives, the original GameCube controller is the only setup that feels natural to me. I am uncertain what is meant by "special" regarding the GameCube controller in the poll options, unless perhaps you mean the one that came with the bundle on launch day. If so, I've never used that one since I have several old controllers to gradually wear out first. I would assume the 2014 model to be no different from the 2001 models other than the Smash logo.

Yes, by "special" I mean the GC controller that came with Smash Wii U when it came out. Since everyone is so particular about this I could change it to "Special SSB4 GameCube controller/Original GC controller" I suppose. Or give the original GC controller its own option.

Thank you for your reply and vote by the way. :estatic:

Since I don't have a Wii U at home, I practice on the 3DS. Then when I go over to my brother's house, I use a Gamecube controller to play on the Wii U itself.

Surprisingly, I use the Pro Controller because it feels like a better control scheme to me. I'm pretty shocked to see a lot of people using the SSB4 GCN controller considering its gone down the same path as some Amiibo.

I use the Smash 4 GameCube controller that came in the bundle. I do like the pro controller as well, but I rarely use it. I have several GameCube controllers, but I'm considering ordering either a custom controller or the white Smash one just to have as a spare.

I only own the 3DS version, so at friends houses or local tournies, I hook up my 3DS. (funny how I am the only person in the survey that has said 3DS. I thought more people would be in this situation)

However, my girlfriend got used to the Wii U gamepad, and when we go to tournies, and she picks up the gamepad to play with, the expression on her opponent's face is priceless.

When the game first came out i started playing with the Wii U Pro Controller, but after a month or so i decided to buy the Mayflash gamecube adapter(which works excellently, by the way.) and a gamecube controller. So then i started using that.

I might look back to using the Wii U Pro Controller for Sm4sh though. Mostly to help myself dividing the mindset between Melee and Smash 4, now that i want to get into that as well.
It worked just as great for me as the gamecube controller does, i mostly bought it to be able to use the gamecube controller for my computer when playing on the Dolphin emulator.

Good choices everyone! Yeah, I'm surprised more people didn't choose the 3DS. And why is this labeled as "Smash Wii U"? I intended for this to be for both Wii U version and 3DS. Strange. :p The GC controller is in the lead right now.

Ever since Melee I've been using the GC controller so it's honestly my personal preference. I've tried the wii-mote, nunchuck, classic, and gamepad but I just can't play as well as I normally would.

Nice Kurumi avatar by the way, she's easily one of my favorite characters from Date A Live.

Thank you! I honestly didn't even know who it was, I just found it somewhere and thought it looked nice. I like your signature by the way. :)

Gamepad or classic controller for me. Since I used the classic in Brawl, I've been using that ever since.

Not strange at all. And you see, this has to be a poll for the Wii U version because Wii U has nearly all of the controls, this poll is not really suitable for 3DS only users, since 3DS is their only control. And heck, you have to buy the game or the controller software in order to use the 3DS on the Wii U version.
GC controller is really a good controller among many Smashers, those who had play Melee and Brawl mostly choose GC controller.

Classic Controller for life! I had a Samus GC controller I found, but the joysticks not being parallel felt incredibly weird for Smash so I used it for another game and it broke within two weeks. It wasn't even a game where I used it a lot, it was Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn where all you use it for is menus. .-. I actually used to use the Wii Remote sideways, but one day I decided to try out Classic and got way better than I ever was with the Wii Remote in like, 2 hours.

I use the GameCube controller and the Wii U GamePad, which I use for Off-TV Play.

I use a really worn down Gamecube controller that barely has rubber on the analog stick. Thanks sunshine...

I'm pretty garbage without a Gamecube controller. I would try to get used to the game pad/ pro controller if the face buttons were above the second joystick. I'v been using the Gamecube for years so any controller that doesn't have a somewhat similar layout makes me play like I don't have hands.

That comment is not really true because a lot of Smashers have both Wii U and 3DS version. But okay.
I was complaining about how you can use your 3DS as a controller on the Wii U version... I bet there are Smashers have both versions, but most of them already give up on the 3DS and play the Wii U version instead.

Oh, I see. Yeah, most people I see that have both versions don't play the 3DS version very often unless they have to.
