Wiimote Nunchuck combo is where it's at. It may take a little while to get used to, but it so much more comfortable. Your hands & arms are free to move around and don't get as cramped as easily. I converted years ago and have never looked back. I'm the top player in our group of over 50 players... so I'm pretty sure it works alright :)

I use the Wii U Pro controller. It's my favorite controller Nintendo has ever made ever in the history of ever period ever.

I use the pro controller. I don't have a GameCube adaptor, plus I personally find it more comfortable to use for a long time than all the other controllers.

For now the Wiimote Nunchuck combo, was hoping to get the Game Cube controller or the Pro Controller since I find doing short hops and a few other things much more easier with those controllers compared to the Wiimote Nunchuck combo.

I use the GamePad. At first I thought I would definitely need the GC Adapter since I have played the previous smash games with it for years, but I'm quite used to the GamePad now.

I used the Pro Controller for the first couple of months when the game first came out and I couldn't get a adapter. I could never get use to the button layout on the Pro Controller. Once I got a GC adapter (checked Game Stop every minute for a few weeks and got lucky one day) I switched to my GC controller and haven't tried anything else again. My problem with using the GamePad is that I don't want to wear it out. If the GamePad was easy to replace I would use it more, but I mainly only use it to play virtual console games in bed. If I want to play smash in bed I use my 3ds.

I use the gamepad, pro controller, and gamecube depending how my hands feel like using for the day.

Personally I use the GamePad the most simply out of convenience, but if someone else really has their heart set on using it I'll go with the Classic Controller Pro, which is arguably better but annoys me because it means I need to replace batteries as opposed to just plugging it in like the GamePad.

I now use the Wii U gamepad
I used to use Gamecube and its fight pad clone but after several weeks of playing 1v1 FG on the couch next to the router with only the gamepad ive altered my controller scheme enough to make it my go to choice.

It's up to circumstance for me. When I playing on my own wii u then I use my GameCube controller. If I'm playing away from home I use my new 3ds XL as a controller

GameCube controller pretty much always, but I also don't mind the Pro Controller.

I use the Gamecube controller, and before I got my adapter, I used the Hori Battle Pad (It's a classic controller, but it looks and feels like a Gamecube controller). I haven't tried the Pro Controller (it's so freaking expensive), but I hear it's good and I'll probably buy it when I have money.
I've actually enjoyed using the Hori Battle Pad.

I struggled getting used to playing Smash Wii U with the Game Pad and regular classic controller and never really got the hang of them. After playing a bunch of Smash 3DS, I was okay with using the 3DS controller, but I was a little worried about wearing out the circle pad and you can't use it as a controller in all game modes anyway.

Given the Gamecube controller adapter's scarcity, I opted for a Hori Battle Pad. Now that first party adapters are a bit more readily available, I've considered just switching to the proper Gamecube controller, but I haven't really felt much of need to do that. I don't have a bunch of people to play with locally who would want Gamecube controllers and the Battle Pad is working out fine for me. Plus, unlike the Gamecube controller adapter, the Hori Battle Pad works in other games, including Mario Kart 8 and Brawl when played in Wii Mode, so I've been able to get some extra mileage out of it.

I use the Gamepad. If I had the adapter thing, I would use Gamecube controller, though. Eh, I do like the Gamepad. On Brawl, I used to use just the Wiimote and thought it was okay...until I bought a Gamecube controller. So much easier!

My cube controller is quite loud and sometimes I play in the late hours of the night so I will sometimes switch to Pro controller/gamepad (modified controls to emulate GCN controller of course). IMO gamepad and pro controller are very identical apart from the hand distance on the gamepad. I do however prefer my hands closer together with the pro controller.

Can switch between those 3 options effortlessly :D

As answered in numerous prior incarnations of this thread, absolutely nothing feels more natural to me than the GameCube controller. The only time the Wiimote alone ever had any advantage was for ease of taunt transforming Samus in Brawl. On the rare occasion that I happen take advantage of the Gamepad's screen remotely, I primarily use it for light play, such as maintaining my equipment inventory to ensure I don't get too close to the 3000 piece maximum, or to let Smash Tour run in auto-pilot and make sure it didn't get stuck on a Home Run Contest or Target Blast screen.

And if I ever do use controllers outside of the GameCube controller for more than five seconds, then I always have to swap the shield and grab controls to match the Smash 64 / Melee standards (i.e. left shoulders/triggers were always shield while the grab only ever existed on the right side of the controller.) Why on earth did Nintendo reverse this for Pro / Gamepad?!

My classic controller broke last night so I'm stuck with using the Gamepad now. It's taking a bit to get used to. I don't like how far apart the control stick is from the buttons and the grab/shield buttons are awkward for me. I really need money for a Gamecube adapter. :/

I use the n3ds and the pro controller. Funny thing is the n3ds taught me how to tilt attack consistently and how to be gentle with the slidepad.

GameCube Controller forever. I've tried to use the Gamepad from time to time (when I just feel like laying down and relaxing in bed) but I tend to get confused with the controls often. I'll go for a shield and try to grab, and when I wanna jump I'll use one of the attacks instead. I become quite derpy with it so I prefer to stick with my Smash Edition Controller. Then again I could always adjust the controls on the Gamepad to fix that issue but meh. The Gamecube Controller just feels more right to me.

Gamecube controller, couldn't play smash without it. Not to mention wavedashing and all the other good tech in Pm and Melee would basically be impossible for me on a different controller.

Wii U Gamepad

is that tournament friendly?
It depends on the tournament so it would be wise to check the rules before attending. Wonder what happens if your opponent also likes to use the gamepad. You can only connect 1 per system right?

I'm torn between the Pro and the Gamecube. I've spent a ton of hours with both. I love the face buttons layout, joystick and wired convenience at tourneys (no syncing/unsyncing) the gamecube offers. But I hate the gamecube's fat/deep shoulder buttons and I find the Pro much more comfortable. Still haven't made up my mind. Used Pro at my 1st tourney. Gonna try the gamecube controller next tourney.

If I could have a wired Pro controller with the gamecube's face button layout, joystick and the pro controller's triggers I'd be in heaven.

Wii U Gamepad

is that tournament friendly?
Usually not from what I've seen.
