Who do you think Nintendo is going to invite to the invitational? Why? What about announcers? What format will it be in?

I'm probably going to guess that a couple of players that took part within the Melee tournament from last year's EVO event could possibly be getting invites.

I can see it following the new For Glory ruleset. Hopefully it will be stock but I see it being timed instead. Also some selection in controls would be nice. It's hard to take any tournament seriously when the majority of the players are playing with wiimotes.

If Bowser is crazy powerful, I want to see Gimpyfish make it.

I'm betting on HugS or or Dehf to be vying for a SoCal ticket. I bet DEHF could make it if Falco is on the roster. His only main that's showed up so far is Fox and he's well known for his tight and entertaining Falco play. I bet Fox is relatively unchanged so it will be an uphill fight for him.

I'm praying that TheReflexWonder doesn't show up at my Best Buy.

It's pretty safe to bet on a Marth main winning the tournament. There are so many and they are so good, and Marth will always be a good character.

They'll most probably get players with technical finesse in both Melee and Brawl, along with a few with a lot of exposure (Evo, the Doc). M2K is a lock. Zero and Larry are also very good contenders. I dunno why but I feel they'll pass up on Mango, but I really hope I'm wrong. They might also invite Isai, just because.

My guess? Guys that have a lot of technical knowledge, history, and exposure.

Mew2King, Ken, Hungrybox, Mango, and Armada are a few that come to mind.

I feel like they will try to pick top Brawl players before top Melee players. I don't know why, that's just what it seems to me.

These are the top 8 from last year's EVO competition:

1. Mango (Fox, Falco)
2. Wobblez (Ice Climbers)
3. CT|Hungrybox (Jigglypuff)
4. Armada (Peach)
5. EMP|Mew2King (Fox, Sheik, Marth)
5. VGBC|Dr.PeePee (Falco)
7. Ice (Sheik)
7. Shroomed (Dr. Mario)

Makes me wonder which character(s) will they use (if invited), since some of the characters they had used have yet to be unveiled for SSB Wii U/3DS.

I don't think you're going to see Mango, Wobbles, Ice or Armada: Mango has only ever not played Melee/PM once, and that was to play an imported version of Brawl; Wobbles retired and writes a blog now; Ice is a European player and I don't think he'll come unless there is a significant, reasonably attainable payout; Armada is a European player as well but he also came out of retirement and ended up focusing on Doubles, and there are talks about getting the format pushed out of most events to focus on Singles.

Everyone is predicting a bunch of melee players who relentlessly bashed Brawl and are never gonna play in a smash 4 tournament. Why would Nintendo bring them in?

As far as specific character mains go, I'd say that Brawl players are more likely. Esam would have a better chance than Axe in that regard. But I doubt that they'll be choosing the players this way, they will most probably decide based on overall popularity and exposure.

All these players you mention tried Brawl. Why would this game be any different?

Step 1. Invite 15 renowned smash players (M2K, Isai, etc.)
Step 2. Invite Shokio.
Step 3. Rig the tourney so that the 15 let Shokio win.
Step 4. Sakurai is the final challenger.
Step 5. Reveal Ridley right then and there.
Step 6. Sakurai destroys Shokio with Ridley if he hasn't **** his pants and fled in terror.
Step 7. Win everything ever.

M2K will, Hbox will most likely, but a lot of melee only players have openly said they don't think it'll be good or hope it won't be good. Hbox said he wants it to suck and armada already thinks it'll be bad before even playing it. I just don't get the point in inviting people who will probably have nothing positive to say.

Woah woah woah. Hbox seems like the least likely person to openly voice an opinion like that. Wants it to suck? Are you sure about that? Because even the most stubborn of players still want the game to turn out good, even if their definition of good happens to be Melee 2.0.

Is the definition of sucking "Not like Melee?" Because I don't even need to play this game to know it'll be good, even from a competitive stand point. The effort put into this game is astonishing. The newcomers blow my mind from a gameplay standpoint. I didn't even know that I wanted half of them but Sakurai crafted them brilliantly.

That said, some Melee players are too attached. Even if the game is just as competitive as Melee, the different mechanics will turn them off. Only Smash players should be invited. "Smash players" being people who appreciate the series as a whole and won't even hesitate to get into Smash 4. So pretty much.... Mew2King... And players like him.

I also could swore that mew2king and armada declared that they look to be the best smash 4 player. How dose armada think its bad if he want to be the top?

He said it on reddit. And ya, I basically mean don't invite people who think anything that's not melee is a poor game.

Well, I think Nintendo would most likely prioritise the players sponsored by big groups or players are icons.

Sponsored:
1. Crs.Chilllin
2. Crs.Hbox
3. LiquidKen
4. LiquidKDJ

Iconic
5. CT|EMP M2K (The King)
6. CT|EMP Armada (Euro Smash Rep.)
7. Ally (Canadian Smash Rep.)
8. CT ZeRo (Chilean Smash Rep.)
9. VGBC PPMD (Dat Beard!)
10. Rolex (Project M Community)
11. Nairo (Brawl)
12. ADHD (Brawl)
13. Mango (LMAOOOOOOOO)
14. Isai (MeVSeC needs some action in a new game. Maybe he'll like SM4SH.)
15. Wobbles (Maybe Nintendo will pull him out of retirement to reveal the ICies.)
16. Azen (Holds records for various Nintendo games.)

10. Rolex (Project M Community)
Not only will Nintendo not even consider the Project M community, since as far as they're concerned it doesn't exist, but Rolex, while certainly good, would hardly be considered the best candidate to rep the community.

So glad this thread got made, because I have quite a few thoughts on this. Before I mention my picks, let's establish the purpose of this tournament:

1- Sell the upcoming Smash title by...
2- Acknowledging the competitive community through...
3- Appointing prominent members of the gaming community to...
4- Showcase the potential of the title as a whole.

With that being said, we shouldn't expect the top 8 players from melee and brawl to play each other. (Even though I would love that.)

The first pick is pretty obvious: Mew2King. I don't think this needs explanation, but let me know if it does.

Second, Armada. This may seem like a stretch, but think about it. Interesting character choice, European representation, and the connection between EMP and Nintendo.

Third and Fourth: Evo Champions, Ken and Mango. (Is there a solid reason why we think Mango doing this is a stretch? Let's also keep in mind the location of the event, which makes obtaining certain players much more realistic.)

Here's where things get interesting... I have a question: What about Japan? This is a Japanese company, after all. Sakurai has to have heard from players in his own backyard. Why wouldn't they a player or two from that region? I have no idea who they would bring, but let me guess Captain Jack for the sake of naming someone.

7th and/or 8th- Your favorite Streamer/Youtuber/LPer/Online Celebrity. This might be a little controversial, but it makes sense.

8th and/or 9th- Your favorite Esports Figure. I'm adding these in addition to the previous under the assumption they are using this tournament to appeal to the Esports organizations in addition to the consumers. The overall professionalism of the event will also be factor in this decision. I might even add more spots to this...

9th through 16th- Assorted Smash players, mostly West Coast players due to location and whatnot. I'd like to think otherwise, but I somehow doubt it.

I don't think they will use wiimotes. In a demo from E3 2013, Pro Controllers were used.

I'm guessing:

  • M2K (no brainer)
  • Armada (Sweden Rep)
  • Ken (MLG/doc)
  • KDJ (doc)
  • Mang0 (doc)
  • Hbox (doc)
  • ESAM (brawl)
  • Nario (brawl)
  • Wife (well spoken/doc)
  • aMSa (Japan Rep)
  • Isai (64)
  • Azen (holds multiple records in Nintendo games)
  • Prog (well spoken and community rep/if he isn't asked to commentate)
  • Ally (brawl)
  • ZeRo (brawl)
  • Wobbles (well spoken)

And for announcers I could see D1, Prog (if he isn't asked to play), and Wife (if he isn't asked to play)

M2K's a great player... I just don't know if he'd be the best person to represent the competitive Smash community.... He's a little... sporadic...
