Poll for funsies. I meant offline and online, but forgot to put it. But I think it's especially important to be nice to random people online. They could be having a REALLY bad day and they just want to play to have fun! So what are the nice things you do online or in person?

Most of mine are:
1) I don't use the spawn invincibility to get a kill or rack up damage. I personally use the invinc-time to taunt, pluck turnips, or charge. On rare occasions I will Fair/Bair/Dair as Zelda if the person is perfectly in range of the sweet spot when I drop down. It's required by Zelda's royal fabulous orders, sorry. :C

2) If I get an accidental KO because of trumping or fast falls past the ledge or obviously hits the wrong buttons (sans me purposefully gimping), it'll feel unfair. Usually I just KO myself if I have more stocks than the opponent.

3) Try not to capitalize on failed hits from Rest or other heavy lag moves used as kill moves (Farore's Wind). Unless the person is viciously fishing for them, in which case, they extend the match and then it gets unfun and is also a bad habit. Sometimes tough love is required, soooo. . .

:4zelda:*Magical sparkly jazz hands*
:4jigglypuff:*Magically turns into an explosive pillar of light*

4) I never capitalize on hurting someone when they're taunting after kills/at the match start. No teabagging and also no taunting after the 1st stock. Maybe just holding down instead because Zelda looks fantabulous.

5) I tone down fighting skills against players who aren't exactly competitive level yet. They can't learn or have fun if I'm KOing them 2 times in 30 seconds. I spend about 20 mins and try to teach them their mistakes. Sometimes mirror match to show them combos, but lose just so I don't seem like I'm going "MINE IS BETTER! HAHA!" to them. So at the very least they're having fun because they're getting better over time.

Best Fabulous Nice Super Wise Teacher Lady Sm4sh Character Award goes to. . . :4zelda: and also :4wiifitm: somehow.

To be completely honest, a handful of the things you mentioned (KOing yourself, not hitting off failed rests, etc) could come off as patronizing depending on the situation, even though that definitely does not seem to be your intention for doing them.

When offline, sure, you can throw a stock away when your friend accidentally SDs, especially if it's a close match and you're wanting it to come down to the end, but online you're unable to portray the body/vocal language that makes the action seem friendly versus being condescending. A friendly or joking "nooooo" as you see your friend miss the ledge goes a long way to saying that you're not jumping off the edge because you think that they need the handicap in order to win, but rather because you just want to keep it fair, but without that a lot of people could read into it in different ways.

In general I feel that purposely not taking advantage of mess-ups (other than in cases of very different skill levels) or purposeful SDs does the opponent a disservice. It's not your fault they messed up and it's not a good idea to get people in the habit of expecting people to cover for your mistakes.

That being said, I feel that it's perfectly possible to be nice without doing anything like described above. In person it's very easy with a good handshake after the match and a sincere GG. Don't treat the opponent as anything but an equal in terms of game skill, even if it's obvious that there is a difference.

Lol I just made a post in the smash sins thread about mean people and how I deal with them.

However, as soon as I come across a player who appears friendly (uses nice tags like GG / LOL / NICE / *smiley face* or taunts at beginning of matches and waits for me to taunt back), then I will also use my playful tags and SD when they do and such. No matter the level of the player as long as they are nice I will add them afterwards with a positive comment in the request like good games and usually something good about them like good character or good punish or smart player etc.

Sometimes I forget when a player likes to begin a match with taunt so I run at them, stop, slowly walk back to my starting position and occasionally turn around once while doing it, then taunt. I dunno, there's tons of stuff you can do to show you're a friendly player without chat.

Just like Roukiske, I was just on that Smash Sin thread on dealing with people with poisonous thoughts.

Meeting nice people online is pretty common from my experience. When I get hooked up with someone, they would change their tags to "Hi", "Hello", and **** like that. If we both have the same skill level, we would eventually go for multiple rounds until the person would change their tag to something like "ONE MORE" or "LAST ONE" to remind me that our next match would be our last. Once that's done, regardless who win and who lost, we exchanged our "GGs", "URGOOD", "BYE" and some other positive tags like those before leaving. And what's more awesome is that the same person would eventually go to my Miiverse profile and added me as a friend, which I would definitely accept.

Regardless of the majority of For Glory players being total asses and sucking each other's balls, I'm just grateful that there are those who actually knows how to have fun and be friendly towards others, which is something I always do since I'm a kind-hearted person who's been through hell a lot in life.

It depends on the situation but if someone else starts the match with a hello taunt I usually taunt back. Again I never hit them during the taunt. Also GG tags n such.

I'd say "GG" if the games were good.

I taunt when then an opponent gets a really nice or silly KO on me. Or if we both fall after something happens offstage.

Rush me: not gonna bend over backwards for. Taunt/stand there: super chill dis gonna be a fun player who I will be entirely nice to.

If I gimped them, then I'll take the kill. If they die by mistake at low %s or I did nothing, I remove a stock. It will lessen the annoyance they feel from lag/wrong button pushing mistakes/etc.

If they mess up a punishable move by using it waaaaay off the mark, then I assume it's a mistake or wrong hard read. So I don't punish them. If they do is 2 or 3 more times then I retaliate, kind of like a "hey you shouldn't do that" nudge. If they are all up in my face and I block their kill move or narrowly escape, I will act. Normally Dair, Usmash, Uair/Farore's Wind as Zelda. Which is a combo that really makes people reevaluate their tactics.

That's more understandable. It might of just been the way it was worded in the OP that it seemed like unbroken rules that you followed, which as I was saying, when displayed against the wrong person could be considered like you were acting down for them. If you happen to find someone who seems to act cool enough that it's basically like you're sitting there playin with a buddy, doin what you're doin seems perfectly fine.

I usualy rush in towards my opponent, be it on ground or in air, and regret that poorly timed fast-fall.

Most of my habits extend to just nametags, with the occasional in-game gesture as well. I have names like "Hello.", "Good luck.", "Good game.", "Nice!", "Thank you.", "You rock.", ":)", "XD", and so on. One rule I always adopt is that if my opponent does it first, I'll always do it back. Sometimes my opponents give friendly taunts before a match begins, in which case I immediately stop what I'm doing and also give one. (Sometimes I hit them with a projectile during their taunt, which I immediately crouch in apology for.) I've even had a few people stop battling once lag spiked!

When someone else does this, it can really make your day. One time I encountered a Fox who, after I screwed up my recovery, literally risked his stock to catch me in his up special and save me. Needless to say, it was one of the most heartwarming things I'd ever seen on FG and I immediately added the person.

By the way, @ DeKu Skrub DeKu Skrub , try this thread if you haven't already. :) I'd also be happy to battle. Start a conversation with me if you're interested.

Cease edge guarding during lag spikes. Doesn't matter if my opponent returns the favor or not. Edge guarding during lag is quite not fun.

I'll return the favor for Mercy SD's too. Usually I'll SD if my foe does in a future fight, but if it's the same fight and I get a Shield Break, I will allow them to recover and return the fight to neutral.

If I'm feeling really nice then I will pick a character like Wario and not even attack at all. I don't want to hurt their feelings. But I don't want my feelings hurt either, so I run away from the opponent / bike under the stage the whole time and drag the game to Sudden Death.

Personally, I try to mimic the persons personality/habits online.

What I do really varies on what the person themselves do. If they taunt at the start of the match I'll let them and even do the same. If I get "Good Game" Tags I'll also typically put my own up. If I enter For Fun and there happens to be a Taunt Party going on (which seems to be 80% of the time now) I'll even join in for a few rounds. Online friend-wise, if one of us accidentally has the Smash Ball on (usually me; typically have it on for IRL friends) one of us will get it and purposely waste it off stage to get it out of the way. One habit me and an online friend typically partake in is we'll purposely SD if we both have an extra stock left during a 3 or 4-way online match. That way we're both on even ground and can duke it out fairly.

So as long as the person is nice and respectful I'll do the same and even share in their habits.

If the opponent accidentally SD's at the start of the match I'll usually SD as well to make it a fair fight. Also if we had some good matches I'll say "Good games" before leaving. On top of this I never taunt after my opponent loses a stock. I only do these things if they were fun to fight and didn't spam/taunt/insult me via nametag (in those cases I usually taunt after a KO).

I typically back off during lag spikes or if the foe doesn't move. If the latter, I may do a harmless footstool or goof around with Wavebouncing and running in place on ledges. If the lag continues, then I'll push through and finish the fight (unless the guy SDs or something)

Throw out a "greeting" taunt before fighting, normally in cases of a ditto or if I've met a cool / friendly player. Granted it's For Glory an' all, but it's pretty heartwarming when we lighten up for a bit while we give it our all.

And then I give them the usual GGs after a nice match. I compliment and/or wish them luck before I leave after a Best of 3 or so.

If I'm having a good time with someone and they SD by obvious accident first stock I'll usually SD to even the odds. I don't like taking games that I might have lost without that goof. I like to feel like I've earned it, and I'm sure it's not fun for my opponent to try to recover from a serious setback like that the rest of the match.

I return match start taunts. Sometimes the opponent punishes me for this, which sucks. if I accidentally hit someone during a match start taunt I'll usually give em a hit for free.

I just try to be a good sport in general.

  • Greeting taunts.
  • SD if my opponent dies in a preventable way (i.e. side-B instead of up-B).
  • Footstooling if opponent is not available.
  • Use "GGs" after a certain amount of matches.

[For Glory] I tend to taunt at the start of the match, mainly just to show that I'm not taking it too seriously. Also if someone clearly goes off the stage by mistake (*ahem* Side-B Little Mac *ahem*) I'll kill myself if I have higher stock. If my opponent is not moving I won't do anything, and same way with taunts. I tend to not punish them because I believe they are all in good fun. I'm pretty sure though there are some jerks out there wanting to be immature.

Also, if I end up playing around for the entire match with someone and they die due to a sudden death, I'll SD enough times for them to win the next one.

On a final note if I keep on beating a player in FG I'll sometimes intentionally play easier because I don't want to get them upset or waste their time. I still try to show them that I'm nice. In my opinion, in any competitive activity you should try and be a good sport because a lot of people have enough issues without dealing with jerks (me included). Being a good sport, especially if you keep on winning, shows that you are a good person who doesn't let victories get to your head.

[For Fun] If I join a taunt party I'll join in instead of attacking. Whether or not I goof around in For Fun depends on what the room is.

OMG y'all are such cool people, I love it. I do the same, gg tags, SD if they do,and so on. I do like to taunt after each ko though, some people clearly rage when I do that, but it's all in good fun. Also, if any of you cool people wanna play me, I'd be happy to. Need to practice more and learn from people better than me so I can maybe get on tourney level. Anyone?

I always tag ggs after every match, even if there playstyle is flowcharty or the typical Fg player, least I can do is be respectful in a mode filled with nothing but toxic.

Taunting before a match as a signs of "Good luck!" changing my name after the match to "GOODMATCH" or "NICELUIGI" etc etc. I try to be nice to people, because I love the same respect in return.

Sometimes if my opponent does something really silly (like doing a side B instead of an up B when recovering) and loses a stock because of it, I'll SD one of my own to be nice. :)
