What are the biggest differences between Japanese smashers and American smashers?

I keep hearing that their playing styles differ, but how? The idea of separate communities being the source of varied playing styles intrigues me.

From what ive seen, the way they hold the controllers. I saw one guy use his left thumb and index finger to use the stick on the controller. Pretty wierd.
