Yea, space animals = Fox and Falco. I can't say it's a shorter way of saying it, since they're both four syllables. It's just a funner way of saying it.

Space Animals are Fox and Falco, and the term is usually used because of the characters fast falling speeds

granted, if it was chosen for their falling speeds, they wouldn't stay in space very long now would they?

Animals in space originally served to test the survivability of spaceflight before manned space missions were attempted. Later animals were flown to investigate various biological processes and the effects microgravity and space flight might have on them. As of 2004, five national space programs have flown animals into space: the United States, the Soviet Union, France, China and Japan.
The first animals intentionally sent into space were fruit flies, which traveled along with corn seeds aboard a U.S.-launched V2 rocket in mid July, 1946.
Albert II in a U.S. launched V2 became the first monkey in space on June 14, 1949.
Numerous monkeys of several species were flown by the U.S. in the 1950s and 60s.
The first animal in orbit was the Soviet dog Laika, onboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957.

...
You get the idea. This was on Wikipedia, so of course it's right. No foxes or "Falcos" <--?
Ever launched in space, mostly monkeys, dogs and fruit flies.
Don't feed the TC lies XD.
