Since this will be a feature in Mario Kart 8, I think Sakurai should add a robust recording feature to the Wii version! Obviously Wii U doesn't have that much memory to play around with, but with Mario Kart 8, you can record up to 30 seconds of footage. That's better than nothing, at least.

Imagine a virtual button on the gamepad saying "record", and as soon as you touched that button, the game would start recording what's on screen for a certain amount of time. And then you should be able to cut, copy and paste different sippets together for a cool/cute/sexy video. This basically sounds like a built-in video editor, but why not?

And then share it! Wii U already has a built-in YouTube app, why not synchronize with that? Imagine the possibility to upload new videos to your YT channel just like that, or share them in Miiverse.

Previous Smash games, except the original, both had a Camera Mode with photo taking. This is the next step, now that technology has become more advanced.

What kind of videos would you make? Nice victory videos? Game bug videos? Sexy videos? Celebrating videos?

It's pretty gimmicky, but I suppose it could work. It sounds a lot like the Xbone's "Record that" business.

Yeah, and it's fun! Just imagine the fun of uploading your own, edited Smash videos for all to see.

I sure know what kind of videos I would upload. <3

I really just want a replay editor akin to Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Or at least a free camera when viewing replays and when taking photos.

I don't see a video converter being added. And I plan to buy an Elgato before the game comes out anyway. It'd be nice for those who don't have recording equipment, but I can't imagine converted videos being of the highest quality as it would take up too much space on the Wii U, and the Wii U does not have support for playing videos as is, other than streaming them.

They could just have a service where you can upload raw replay files onto server, similar to Tekken (I know I keep suggesting things in relation to Tekken but considering Bandai Namco is creating this game, I can't help it, as many features from Tekken could probably be implemented into Smash).

I thought this thread was going to discuss the possible effects Nintendo might have on uploaded footage, akin to the copyright issues last year.

Might wanna talk about that.

I don't think this will be a problem if official replays are a part of the experience.

If they aren't, it's really anyone's guess. They ARE allowing the Melee streaming at tournaments this year. So they may let Smash 4 off the lease when it comes to Youtube videos.

Yeah if they're officially from the game & system there's not gonna be a problem. The multitudes of replays from SSB games on Youtube haven't gotten copyright strikes either.

To support the whole free camera idea, it seems that stages have more than a black screen where the fight cam is this time around. You can see it during the sections where it goes into a face forward view with Fox + Marth and Bowser + Little Mac

In the case of Skyloft, it doesn't mean anything for the free camera idea, as that stage is a travelling stage much like Delfino Plaza in Brawl, and is a port of a location from another game. The stage ends up giving you a 360 degree view anyway, from what we've seen of the flight pattern, so they can't have a black void here.

You are correct about the Little Mac scene though, and that has left me hopeful.

That's a very interesting obervation... could that be the reason the graphics are so "meh" IF it's just 720p?

It'll help the community of machinamators (people who make Brawl/Melee videos that have fleshed out characters and stories), and, admitably I've always wanted to give it a try too.

Yeah, me too! It's one of the reason's I want an Elgato.

I already have plans for making an SSB4 version of Luigi's Ballad! :p

Perhaps, maybe it's just backgrounds or places players won't see alot, as if they're only seen sometimes, what's the point of putting meticulous work into it, right?

Didn't Brawl have a feature to record matches? All they'd ave to do with Smash 4 is let you share them on the internet.

Yes, though they were limited to 3 minutes, and you could not edit camera angles or anything for cinematic effect.

And technically, you could share them in Brawl, but there was no online replay theater to view or anything. You either exchanged them with friends, or received a daily replay (as well as a photo and Stage).

And then it would depend how much that was. What annual fee would you be willing to pay for that?
Well, obviously it wouldn't be videos only. I see some eShop bonuses similar to PlayStation Plus as well. Maybe other perks too.

Five dollars a month at most for all of the above.

Actually, the Brawl replays aren't really videos, but commands that replicate the match. Sadly, the commands could easily get messed up, ruining the replay altogether.

Now, with Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, the replays that you can upload are actual videos. Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4 could easily follow Tropical Freeze's path if you want to have replays that truly are replays.

I would push for HD video conversion from the game itself if the Wii U had a model with a large hard drive, but there is none. So I'm not sure they'd do it.

Yeah, I noticed that. I was playing project m, and the first half of a math is normal. Then the commands are messed up completely and characters don't do anything and just fall off and die.

yeah Brawls replay files were so small since it was just button inputs. Replays are messed up in Project M for whatever reason (I 3 stocked a match but my replay showed me losing and SDing multiple times). It would require more space on a hard drive to have actual videos, but that's something Nintendo should consider, especially since the other next gen (when do I start calling them current gen?) consoles have those features.

Personally, I think it was mostly a good decision for Nintendo to keep the hard drive space small. Bigger hard drives push the price of the system up, so keeping the hard drive space small and providing the ability to use external drives means the price of the system is cheaper, and people who need that space can spend money on it if they need it.

The only downside is that it discourages replay export features for games like Smash, because the common consumer will not be aware of the ability to use an external drive, and likely won't even need it, so in the developers eyes, there's no real point spending time on that sort of thing.

Couldn't proper replays require and additional HDD then? It's not like it would be totally wrong to force people buying one for wanting "extra" features.

And then I finally would have some use for my 2TB HDD! :-P

I mean everybody and their grandma has 4gb USB stick drives so that's not outside to realm of reasonable.

And in Melee, you needed extra Memory Cards to save more snapshots. Come on, Sakurai! Make it happen!

Is USB 2.0 fast enough to save HD video, though?
