recognize this from the Nintendo World trailer?

well, that black object falling next to Snake was once thought to be a grenade, but now we know that his grenade can only be tossed horizontally. however:

it looks like it could be the blast from his mortar coming back down. what do you guys think?

Edit: Snake's grenades have not been confirmed as horizontal only. I'm sure vertical and dropping will be available to him.

But that image does look a lot more like the mortar than it does the grenades. I agree, it's probably the usmash.

That is definitely his mortar. You can even see the fins spinning behind it. Good find.

even if snake can drop grenades, the shell in the picture starts above him.

I believe a similar thing happens to Wario on the Halberd at the end of the Nintendo World trailer. Wario is on a platform directly above Snake and Snake uses some kind of explosive on Wario.

Yeah there is definetly a mortar behind him, good find. But why is there an explosion/light effects before the mortar hits? He stands there, lights appear, he jumps, then the mortar hits. wth.

it looks like it's from snake and pit attacking the platform.

Whoa... cool.

And I second that grenades can be thrown vertically, too. I think it'll work like a regular item once the pin is pulled, kind of like Link's bombs, where A throws the bomb but so does down B.

Sakurai said that there are only three ways to throw, and all of them are forward.

off topic: Well that would just suck

On topic: it looks like that flash of light before the mortar lands is snake, Dsmashing(grenade hop)?

that makes the mine down B, unless his tilts also use explosives which I doubt.
it does look like the mortar comes down eventually, but it will take a while,(Im sure it goes at least halfway up the screen)

based on that its pretty safe to say :

Dsmash: Grenade hop MIne:confused:
Usmash: Mortar
Fsmash: Bazooka

you probably know the rest(b moves)

Edit: I noticed something, his box is his down B(most likely) so that makes the mine not down B. but what if he plants the mine and then steps on it(Grenade hòp?)
