Not true, actually.

Less than one percent of all opossums tested for rabies actually carry rabies. This is because their body temperature is too low to harbor the virus, as marsupials have much lower body temperatures than other mammals. If one has rabies, it was likely already sick prior to getting it, and most sick opossums wouldn't live through the attack in order to get rabies.
