what do people think about weather effects that you can turn on/off on some stages.

think about fighting in the rain to make things dramatic....or how about playing an epic snowfight. blood will be bright red against the white snow.

or maybe they can have a stage that will be so hot that heat waves can be seen across the screen?

this would definitely make the game cooler no doubt.

It sounds like a good idea if applied in moderation. Wispy Woods showed us the benefits and annoyances of wind effects, so the next logical step would be the occasional blizzard or somesuch.

My ideas, for what they're worth:

Blizzard: Blows through every so often during the fight. Blowing snow mildly impairs view of fighters. Wind blows right or left across stage, forcing players to compensate. Any character standing still for too long begins to receive 1%/second damage from cold, then freezes completely as if hit by a Mr. Freezie.

Thunderstorm: Random chance of drawing a thunderstorm on sky-based stages. Wind blows randomly, even up or down (to represent the updraft and downdraft in a storm cloud), forcing players to compensate. Lightning strikes the battlefield occasionally, telegraphing its arrival with a second or two of electrical crackling on whichever part of the ground it will strike.

Intense Heat (as desert, not, say, a volcano): Not much besides 1%/second damage to anyone caught outside of a shady area.

Tornadoes and hurricanes would be cool, but they would also make everything so hectic that skill and strategy would fly out the window, and I know that annoys some people around here quite a lot.

omg i only want cosmetic weather effects. stuff like the tornado on the hyrule stage in ssb was gorrible
Well, like I said, I wouldn't put tornadoes in there, just wind, lightning and the like. And as you advised in your first post, you could turn the weather off if you didn't like it. I just thought that braving the elements--and perhaps using them to your advantage--would make a battle more interesting.

I love it! Rain in space... I would look forward to seeing it, I'd be neat put something like this in Brawl.

Errr. I didn't mean in space. You kind of need an atmosphere for weather (logic in Smash Bros., El-Oh-El).

Then again, space has its share of asteroid showers and gamma ray bursts.

I would love to see heat waves, snow storms, thunder storms, etc. It would make Brawl so much more aesthetically appealing. But if the weather affected the characters, there should be an unlockable option to turn stage hazards off, like in Mario Strikers Charged.

Mist in Brawl would be awesome if you ask me.
Agreed.

Blood? In my Brawl?

It's less likely than you think.
Someone's a farker :D

Oh and as far as weather effects, they would be cool... but might make the game lag when there's too much stuff going on.

Yoshi's stage cycles thru the seasons doesnt it?

Twenty-two words, Yoshi's Island.
So far we only have snow and other seasons confirmed, it would defintely be awesome if stages would rain, grow misty, etc. as you have suggested.

I think there should be an option in the game that would allow you to make it snow all of the time.

Of course it could have some minor effects to gameplay, but even if it didn't it would amuse me greatly anyways. ^_^

Hyrule Temple in SSB64 begs to differ

It does, but this thread is about weather effects, while as in the Yoshi Stage seasons are just for decoration.

Now as for the topic at hand, i think that weather effects would be a good addition to Brawl. They could definitely add more fun and stategy to the game. Of course, it should be able to be easily turned off.

I think weather effects would be rather cool.. although they shouldn't effect gameplay as night/day don't. But as to your comment about blood bright against snow... I don't think we'll be seeing any blood in Brawl.

Well, I had a thought similar to this.

You know how on melee, if you hold L before playing a stage, you get alternative music?

Perhaps if the player(s) holds the L button, you could see a preview icon of the stage change accordingly while the cursor is over it. For example, the image of Battlefield will be replaced with a snow covered version so the player knows what the options are before choosing. They could also put yet another alternative setting to the R button, such as rain or heat wave. For stages that can't have weather, it could change other things such as the new Pokémon Stadium having a more retro appearance. The fact the player would only have to hold a single button would prevent this idea from becoming time consuming or tedious.

Just my thoughts.

That would be sick. But I don't know how that would work lmao.

Think about "Online Play" .

Actually, that brought up an issue when discussing Animal Crossing Wii. People first thought it would be a cool idea to use the weather system, but then immediately someone pointed out a problem. Some places never see snow, some places get rain maybe a few times quarterly, some places don't get a lot of sunshine ect. In this case, there'd be too many people missing out on all of the weather options.

Aww.. Yeah that would suck.

...because then it would NEVER snow! >_< Plus I'd have insane weather in the game. One minute it'd be in the 70s and storming, and the next it would be in the 90s, sunny, and humid like nothing else. Or in the case of one day last winter, it was in the 70s in the morning, and in the evening we where under more then one inch of ice. =P (that's always fun! ^_^)

Still I LOVE the idea of selectable weather. This is always been something I've really wanted seeing as weather has to be one of the most awesome and most interesting things to me out there. (aside from music.)
As for effecting gameplay, meh. Maybe if it was icy it would be "slippery". If it does happen it definitely needs to be turn offable like items.
