wavedashing off the ledge without grabbing it

Every time I try to wavedash off the ledge it grabs the ledge, I see other people wavedash off then double jump bair or something similar, what am I doing wrong if I always grab the ledge?

You gotta hold down on the control stick as you fall past the ledge in order to not grab it

You need to be holding down as you pass the ledge. Just hold down to fast-fall past the ledge, and immediately DJ -> Aerial after that.

Thank you both. I kinda thought this was the problem but I also tried that method and was doing it wrong apparently. Can I just hold down from the wavedash or do I need to input another down to fast fall past the ledge?

Well, if you're holding downwards to WD, you're most likely not doing the longest WD possible. I would practice holding almost horizontal and then inputting a separate fast fall.
